Avoid Suspicion and Hate
📖Sahih al-Bukhari 6066
Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet ﷺ said: “Beware of suspicion, for suspicion is the worst of false tales. And do not look for the others’ faults, and do not spy on one another, and do not practice Najsh, and do not be jealous of one another, and do not hate one another, and do not desert (stop talking to) one another. And O Allah’s worshipers! Be brothers!”
Description:
This hadith outlines foundational ethics in Islam for maintaining peace, trust, and love within the community. The Prophet ﷺ lists dangerous behaviors that corrupt hearts, destroy relationships, and break brotherhood — and replaces them with one powerful command: “Be brothers!”
Quranic Context:
-
Beware of Suspicion
📖Quran 49:12
“O you who have believed, avoid much suspicion. Indeed, some suspicion is sin. And do not spy, nor backbite one another…”
→ Suspicion leads to lies, slander, and broken trust. -
Do Not Look for Faults
📖Quran 24:19
“Indeed, those who love to spread immorality among the believers will have a painful punishment…”
→ Exposing others’ flaws invites Allah’s anger. -
Do Not Spy
📖Quran 49:12 (continued)
→ Spying is a major invasion of privacy and is condemned. -
Do Not Practice Najsh (deceptive bidding)
📖Quran 83:1-3
“Woe to those who give less [than due]… but take in full when they receive.”
→ Islam forbids cheating in any form. -
Do Not Be Jealous
📖Quran 4:54
“Or do they envy people for what Allah has given them of His bounty?”
→ A heart filled with envy is distant from contentment and gratitude. -
Do Not Hate One Another
📖Quran 59:10
“…and do not place in our hearts hatred toward those who have believed…”
→ Islam calls for clean hearts and mutual love. -
Do Not Desert One Another
📖Quran 3:103
“Hold firmly to the rope of Allah… and do not become divided…”
→ Disunity is a threat to the ummah’s strength. -
Be Brothers
📖Quran 49:10
“The believers are but brothers, so make peace between your brothers…”
→ Faith-based brotherhood is more powerful than blood.
On Forgiveness and Major Sins:
Islam teaches that many mistakes can be forgiven, but major crimes like:
- Murder
- Rape
- Adultery (Zina)
are not light matters. If someone commits these, they must face the legal punishment (Hudud) in this life. Even then, we cannot claim they are forgiven – that is only for Allah to decide on the Day of Judgment.
📖Quran 4:93
“Whoever kills a believer intentionally his recompense is Hell, to abide therein forever, and the wrath and curse of Allah are upon him…”
📖Quran 24:2
“The woman and man guilty of adultery – lash each one of them a hundred times…”
On Killing Non-Muslims Unjustly:
Islam strongly forbids killing any non-Muslim who is not at war or harming others. The life of every soul is sacred unless taken with due right (i.e., through law or justice).
📖Quran 5:32
“Whoever kills a soul – unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land — it is as if he had slain mankind entirely…”
📖Quran 60:8
“Allah does not forbid you from being righteous and just toward those who have not fought you because of religion or expelled you from your homes. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.”
📖Sunan an-Nasa’i 4745
The Prophet ﷺ said: Whoever kills a Mu’ahid (a non-Muslim under protection) shall not smell the fragrance of Paradise, though its fragrance is found at a distance of forty years.”
→ Killing a non-Muslim without just cause is a major sin that may lead to Hell, just like murder of a Muslim.
Whether Muslim or non-Muslim – every innocent life is protected under Islamic law. Brotherhood, mercy, and justice are core values that apply universally. As for the crimes of murder, rape, and adultery, they may be punished in this world, but only Allah can decide if the person is **ultimately forgiven in the next.
