Mercy and Maintaining Family Ties
📖Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1924
Abdullah bin ‘Amr narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The merciful are shown mercy by Ar-Rahman. Be merciful on the earth, and you will be shown mercy from Who is above the heavens. The womb is named after Ar-Rahman, so whoever connects it, Allah connects him, and whoever severs it, Allah severs him.”
Explanation:
This hadith teaches us that Allah’s mercy descends upon those who show mercy to others — whether it’s kindness, forgiveness, or fulfilling family ties. The term “rahim” (womb) shares its root with Ar-Rahman, showing how much Allah values family bonds. If you want Allah to keep you under His care, start by showing care to others — especially your relatives. Severing ties breaks your link with divine mercy.
What we learn today:
– Mercy is not weakness – it’s the trait of those honored by Allah.
– If you want to receive mercy in hardships, offer mercy to others in their struggles.
– Modern lifestyles promote selfishness and cutting ties. Islam commands the opposite: to connect, forgive, and uphold kinship.
– Mercy to family, strangers, or even animals invites the mercy of Ar-Rahman.
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 17:23
“And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age while with you, say not to them [so much as], ‘uff,’ and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word.”
→ Mercy begins with your parents – their care must be met with greater care.
📖Quran 47:22-23
“So would you perhaps, if you turned away, cause corruption on earth and sever your [ties of] relationship? Those [who do so] are the ones that Allah has cursed, so He deafened them and blinded their vision.”
→ Severing family ties is not just a sin – it invites Allah’s curse.
