Parents Granted a Crown for Their Children’s Recitation

📖Sunan Abī Dāwūd 1453
Mu’adh al-Juhani reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, Whoever recites the Quran and acts according to what is in it, his parents will be crowned on the Day of Resurrection with a light brighter than the light of the sun in your worldly houses, were it among you. What do you think of one who acts upon this?

  • This hadith highlights the immense reward parents can earn when their children grow up following the guidance of the Qur’an.
  • It does not mean that children will automatically do good while parents do evil. Instead, it emphasizes the importance of raising children with proper Islamic education, teaching them to memorize, understand, and act upon the Qur’an.
  • When children act righteously, it reflects the nurturing and guidance of their parents, and Allah rewards the parents accordingly.
  • Parents themselves are still commanded to obey Allah; if they persist in sin, they will not receive this reward. The hadith focuses on the impact of raising righteous children.

Lessons for Today:

  1. Invest in your children’s Islamic education from an early age.
  2. Encourage memorization and understanding of the Qur’an.
  3. Model good behavior so children can emulate righteous actions.
  4. Understand that children acting on the Qur’an brings spiritual benefit to the parents, but parents themselves must remain obedient to Allah.

Quranic Context:

📖Quran 66:6
“O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones, over which are [appointed] angels harsh and severe; they do not disobey Allah in what He commands them but do what they are commanded.”

  • Parents are reminded of their duty to guide and protect their families, spiritually and morally.

📖Surah At-Tur (52:21)
And those who believed and whose descendants followed them in faith — We will join their descendants with them, and We will not deprive them of anything of their deeds.”

  • Imagine a chain of generations: your father raised you with Qur’an and Islamic teachings. Because you acted righteously, your father receives reward for guiding you in faith.
  • Now, if you raise your children with the same teachings, your children’s righteousness reflects back as reward for you, because they are your descendants who followed your guidance in faith.
  • This creates a chain: each parent benefits from the righteous actions of their children, and those children are linked back to the faith of their parents and even previous generations.
  • The “descendants” in the verse include all those generations, so parents, grandparents, and earlier ancestors gain reward when their children/grandchildren continue in faith.
  • The reward is not automatic for children; they must act righteously. But when they do, it connects back to the parents who taught them.
