Parable of Believers and Hypocrites

📖Sahih al-Bukhari 5059
Narrated Abu Musa: The Prophet ﷺ said: “The example of a believer who recites the Qur’an and acts on it is like a citron which tastes nice and smells nice. And the example of a believer who does not recite the Qur’an but acts on it is like a date which tastes good but has no smell. And the example of a hypocrite who recites the Qur’an is like a Raihana (sweet basil) which smells good but tastes bitter. And the example of a hypocrite who does not recite the Qur’an is like a colocynth which tastes bitter and has a bad smell.”

This hadith categorizes people based on their relationship with the Qur’an and their sincerity in action:

  1. The believer who recites and acts upon the Qur’an
→ Like a citron: sweet in taste and fragrant in smell.
They are beautiful inside and out — their speech is full of wisdom from the Qur’an, and their actions reflect its light. This is the highest rank: someone who knows, recites, and lives the Qur’an.
  2. The believer who acts upon the Qur’an but does not recite it
→ Like a date: sweet in taste, but no smell.
Their deeds are righteous, even if they don’t have the regular habit of recitation. Their sincerity and obedience remain valuable in Allah’s sight — they still benefit themselves and others.
  3. The hypocrite who recites the Qur’an but does not act upon it
→ Like sweet basil: it smells nice, but tastes bitter.
They present a righteous face through recitation, but their heart is corrupted. Their voice may attract admiration, but their actions betray their insincerity.
  4. The hypocrite who neither recites nor acts upon the Qur’an
→ Like colocynth: bitter in taste, and foul in smell.
No benefit in speech or deeds. Their presence brings neither wisdom nor righteousness — both outwardly and inwardly, they are devoid of truth and sincerity.

This hadith teaches us that true value lies not just in reciting the Qur’an but in living by it. Qur’anic knowledge that isn’t acted upon becomes a source of hypocrisy, not benefit.

Quranic Context:

📖Quran 2:2
This is the Book about which there is no doubt—a guidance for those conscious of Allah.
→ The Qur’an is not just to be read—it is meant to guide and transform lives.

📖Quran 62:5
The example of those who were entrusted with the Torah and then failed to uphold it is like that of a donkey carrying books.
→ Carrying scripture without action is useless — knowledge without obedience is weight with no value.

📖Quran 3:199
And indeed, among the People of the Book are those who believe in Allah and what was revealed to you and what was revealed to them, humbling themselves before Allah. They do not sell Allah’s revelations for a small price.
→ True believers live by the revelation, seeking sincerity—not public praise or worldly gain.

The best among us are those whose hearts are filled with the Qur’an and whose lives reflect it. May Allah make us like the citron – beautiful in both word and deed.

Recite the Qur’an

📖Quran 73:4
“Recite the Qur’an slowly and distinctly.”
→ Allah commands not just to recite, but to do so with understanding and reflection (tarteel).

📖Quran 29:45
Recite what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing.
→ Recitation is linked to action — it inspires moral reform and righteous behavior.

📖Quran 2:121
Those to whom We have given the Book recite it with its true recital. They [are the ones who] believe in it.
→ True recitation involves sincerity, understanding, and belief.

Follow and Act on the Qur’an

📖Quran 6:155
And this is a Book We have revealed, blessed – so follow it and fear Allah that you may receive mercy.
→ Recitation alone is not enough. Following it is what earns mercy.

📖Quran 45:6
These are the verses of Allah which We recite to you in truth. Then in what statement after Allah and His verses will they believe?
→ It’s a warning: once the verses are recited, they are to be believed and acted upon — not ignored.

📖Quran 7:3
Follow what has been revealed to you from your Lord and do not follow other than Him as allies. Little do you remember.
→ The Qur’an must be followed — not just admired or quoted.
