Protection for Those Who Recite Before Sleep
📖Sunan al-Tirmidhī 3407
Shaddad ibn Aws reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “No Muslim retires to his bed, reciting a chapter from the Book of Allah, but that Allah entrusts him to the care of an angel. Nothing will approach to harm him until he awakens, whenever he awakens.”
Description:
- This hadith emphasizes the spiritual protection that Allah grants to a believer who ends their day with remembrance of Him and engagement with the Qur’an.
- Allah assigns an angelic guardian to watch over the person during sleep, preventing harm from approaching.
- This protection does not negate death or what Allah has decreed – life, death, sustenance, and ultimate destiny are fully under Allah’s decree (qadr).
- The protection is only against harm, danger, or unlawful threats that could disturb the believer, such as accidents, poison, attacks, or malicious acts of people/jinn – but only if these harms are not already decreed by Allah.
- The hadith distinguishes between Allah’s divine decree (qadr) and haram/forbidden harm that can be avoided through obedience, remembrance, and righteous acts.
Addressing potential doubts from non-Muslims:
- Non-Muslims may argue that “reciting Qur’an before sleep won’t save you.” The point is protection from preventable or worldly harm, not from what Allah has already decreed, like death or unavoidable accidents.
- This is a spiritual safeguard, showing Allah’s mercy on those who obey and engage with His guidance.
Types of harm covered (examples from Islamic texts):
- Physical attacks or accidents – e.g., protection from enemies.
- Whisperings or mischief from Shayṭān – e.g., preventing evil thoughts or temptations during sleep.
- Poison, magic, or unlawful conspiracies – e.g., protection from sorcery if engaging in Qur’an recitation.
- Injustice or oppression from others – e.g., preventing harm from malicious acts that could have been avoided
Important Clarification:
- The angelic protection works only for harm that can be prevented, not for what Allah has decreed.
- If Allah has already decreed a particular event, accident, or harm, it will occur regardless of angelic protection.
- Therefore, this protection is a mercy for believers, safeguarding them from avoidable worldly harm, while fully respecting Allah’s ultimate decree (qadr).
Angelic Protection vs Allah’s Decree
📖Sunan al-Tirmidhī 3407
It does not say that Allah’s decree will not occur. The wording refers to preventable harm that angels can guard against. Death, lifespan, and all that Allah has decreed are still fully under His control.
Explanation:
- The Prophet ﷺ promised protection from harm that can be prevented, such as attacks, accidents, or evil acts of people/jinn.
- This does not negate Allah’s decree (qadr) – what Allah has destined (like death or unavoidable events) will still happen.
- The angels act within the bounds of Allah’s decree, protecting believers from avoidable or unlawful harm, not from what is predestined.
So, the hadith emphasizes angelic protection and Allah’s mercy, but does not override divine destiny.
