Leveling Graves Flat with the Earth

📖Ṣahīh Muslim 968
“Thamamah ibn Shufayy reported: We were with Fadalah ibn ‘Ubayd in the land of the Romans by a place known as Rudis. One of our companions passed away, so Fadalah ordered his grave to be levelled flat. Then, Fadalah said, ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, ordering them to be leveled.'”

📖Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 969
Abu al-Hayyaj reported: Ali ibn Abi Talib said to me, “Shall I not send you upon the mission with which the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent me? Do not leave a graven image but that you efface it, and do not leave a built over grave but that you level it.”

Description:

  • This hadith addresses the Islamic practice of leveling graves after burial.
  • Leveling graves ensures humility, equality, and avoidance of ostentation in burial practices.
  • Elevated graves or markers can lead to grave worship or excessive veneration, which Islam strictly prohibits.

Why This Practice:

  • Islam emphasizes humility in death; all are equal before Allah.
  • Leveling graves prevents status display or misuse, which could distract from true worship of Allah.

Why the Prophet’s ﷺ Grave is Not Leveled:

  • The Prophet ﷺ’s grave is exceptional due to his unique status as the Messenger of Allah.
  • It is located inside Al-Masjid an-Nabawi under restricted access, ensuring no one performs wrongful acts or grave worship.
  • Its preservation is for respect and blessing, not for ostentation or idolization.

What We Learn Today:

  • Graves should reflect humility and equality, avoiding displays that may lead to superstition or worship of the dead.
  • Special respect is allowed for the Prophet ﷺ’s mosque and grave, but worship is strictly forbidden, maintaining proper boundaries.
  • Remembering death through simplicity encourages spiritual reflection and accountability.

Qur’anic Context:

📖Qur’an 49:13
“O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you.”

Status in life and death is based on piety, not grave elevation or worldly distinctions.

📖Qur’an 3:185
“Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection…”

Leveling graves reminds us that death is a great equalizer; worldly displays have no value.

📖Qur’an 6:148
“Those who associate others with Allah will say, ‘If Allah had willed, we would not have associated partners with Him. So leave them alone until they meet their Day which they are promised.”

Warns against idolizing or venerating others besides Allah, including graves.

📖Qur’an 2:165
“And [yet] among the people are those who take besides Allah as equals [to Him]. They love them as they should love Allah…”

Islam forbids taking anyone or anything as a source of ultimate authority or worship, which includes grave veneration.
