The Importance of Five Daily Prayers
📖Sahih al-Bukhari 528
Narrated Abu Huraira: I heard Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) saying, “If there was a river at the door of anyone of you and he took a bath in it five times a day, would you notice any dirt on him?” They said, “Not a trace of dirt would be left.” The Prophet (ﷺ) added, “That is the example of the prayers with which Allah blots out (annuls) evil deeds.”
Description:
The Prophet ﷺ uses the example of a flowing river to show how regular prayers purify the soul. Just as water washes away physical dirt, Salah cleanses spiritual dirt — the smaller sins done unintentionally or without knowledge. It is a daily renewal of the heart and mind through submission to Allah.
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 11:114
“Establish prayer at the two ends of the day and at the approach of the night. Indeed, good deeds wipe out evil deeds. That is a reminder for those who remember.”
→ This verse confirms that Salah erases sins. But this does not mean Allah allows evil as long as you pray — rather, it refers to minor sins done unknowingly or by mistake. Prayer is a reminder, not a license.
🛑 Note: This verse should not be taken to mean only three prayers a day, as other verses in the Qur’an refer to five fixed times of prayer (e.g. 📖Quran 17:78, 📖Quran 20:130).
📖Quran 29:45
“Recite what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Surely prayer restrains from shameful and evil deeds. And the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows what you do.”
→ This verse confirms that prayer purifies the soul, keeps a person away from immorality, and maintains a constant connection with Allah.
📖Quran 4:17
“Allah only accepts the repentance of those who do evil ignorantly or carelessly and then repent soon after. It is they to whom Allah will turn in forgiveness. And Allah is ever Knowing and Wise.”
→ This confirms that forgiveness is for unintentional or lesser sins, followed by sincere repentance. Willful sinning is not included in this mercy.
