Smiling and Supporting
📖Sahih Muslim 2475 b
Jarir reported: Since I embraced Islam, Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) never refused to see me, and he never saw me without a smile on his face. Ibn Numair added that Jarir once complained to the Prophet ﷺ that he could not sit firmly on a horse. So the Prophet ﷺ struck his chest with his hand and said: “O Allah, make him steadfast and rightly-guided.”
Description:
This hadith beautifully captures the Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ consistent kindness, encouragement, and personal involvement in the well-being of his companions. Despite being a leader, teacher, and statesman, he never withheld his smile or presence from others. Jarir ibn Abdullah, who had a personal challenge with horse riding, was not mocked or ignored. Instead, the Prophet ﷺ made dua (supplication) for him and physically reassured him with a gentle gesture. This moment reflects both emotional support and spiritual guidance.
What We Learn Today:
- A smile is a Sunnah – and a powerful tool to build connection and uplift hearts.
- True leadership means being accessible, kind, and encouraging, especially to those struggling.
- Islam values practical help along with spiritual support – the Prophet ﷺ didn’t just advise, he prayed and physically comforted his companion.
- It’s okay to struggle; what matters is turning to someone sincere, and that sincerity should be met with support – not shame.
- This also shows the importance of making dua for others, especially when they admit their weaknesses.
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 9:128
There has certainly come to you a Messenger from among yourselves. Grievous to him is what you suffer; [he is] concerned over you and to the believers is kind and merciful.
— This verse confirms the Prophet’s deep care and concern for his followers. His smile, his dua, and his empathy were not just habits – they were a reflection of his divinely-guided mercy.
