📖Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5728, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2218
Sa’d reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “If you hear of a plague in a land, do not go into it. If it happens in land where you are, do not go out of it.
- This hadith emphasizes precaution during epidemics or contagious diseases, advising believers to avoid spreading or contracting illness.
- The plague referred to here includes any epidemic or infectious disease that is dangerous and widespread, not only the historical “Black Death” type but also modern viruses that can threaten communities.
- Obeying authorities: If rulers or health authorities warn about epidemics and advise quarantine or travel restrictions, Islam encourages following their guidance, as it aligns with preserving life—a core principle in Shariah.
- The instruction reflects trust in Allah combined with practical action. Staying in place during an epidemic shows faith, patience, and responsibility toward society.
Quranic Context
📖Quran 2:195
And do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction.
Entering or leaving a plague-affected area recklessly is considered putting oneself or others into harm, which Allah forbids.
- Follow public health advice, avoid travel to epidemic zones, and practice quarantine if necessary.
- The hadith shows Islam balances trust in Allah with practical action, teaching that faith includes responsibility toward oneself and the community.
- Modern epidemics, such as COVID-19, perfectly illustrate the wisdom of this guidance – staying home or following government and medical guidance is both religiously and scientifically recommended.
