Hellfire awaits reciters who show off

📖Sunan al-Tirmidhī 2383
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Seek refuge in Allah from the pit of sorrow.” They said, “O Messenger of Allah, what is the pit of sorrow?” The Prophet ﷺ said, “It is a valley in Hell from which Hell itself seeks refuge one hundred times a day.” They said, “O Messenger of Allah, who will enter it?” The Prophet ﷺ said, “The reciters who only acted to be seen.”

Who are the reciters?
The “reciters” here means those who recite the Qur’an or religious knowledge in front of people, not for Allah’s sake, but for showing off – seeking fame, praise, or worldly benefit. Their tongues are busy with the Qur’an, but their hearts are empty of sincerity, If a person loves reciting the Qur’an and does so sincerely – to please Allah, to remind themselves, or to let others listen and benefit – then it is a good deed and not a sin. Sharing Qur’an in the right way is an act of reward. But if someone recites only to impress people, seeking status or likes, then it becomes hypocrisy, and in some ways close to disbelief, because the worship was directed to people instead of Allah.

Why such people are in danger of Hell:
Reciting the Qur’an is one of the greatest acts of worship. But if it is done with the wrong intention – to show superiority, gain respect, or be called pious – then the act becomes hypocrisy. Instead of earning reward, it becomes a sin, because it turns worship into a tool of pride. This is why the Prophet ﷺ warned that such people will be punished in the most terrifying valley of Hell.

Quranic Context:

📖Quran 2:264
O you who have believed, do not invalidate your charities with reminders or injury as does one who spends his wealth only to be seen by the people and does not believe in Allah and the Last Day.

Doing a good deed just to be seen cancels its reward.

📖Quran 4:142
Indeed, the hypocrites [think to] deceive Allah, but He is deceiving them. And when they stand for prayer, they stand lazily, showing [themselves] to the people and not remembering Allah except a little.

This shows that worship without sincerity is a mark of hypocrisy.

📖Quran 98:5
And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, being sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakah. And that is the correct religion.

Allah emphasizes sincerity as the core of faith.
