Supplication When Frightened by a Dream
📖Sunan al-Tirmidhī 3528
Abdullah ibn Amr reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “If one of you is frightened by a dream during sleep, let him say: I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger, His punishment, and the evil of His servants, from the insinuations of devils and their presence. Verily, they will never harm him.
This hadith teaches a powerful protection for the believer when troubled by bad dreams. By seeking refuge in Allah’s perfect words, the believer shields himself from:
- Allah’s anger – which does not mean human-like emotions, but rather the rejection of His commands. His anger manifests in punishment and consequences for disobedience.
- Allah’s punishment – a reminder that ignoring His guidance brings harm in this life and the next.
- The evil of His servants – meaning both harmful humans and misguided Muslims who may wrong others.
- The whispers of devils – from among both jinn and people influenced by Iblis who spread doubt, fear, or temptation.
Meaning of “Verily, they will never harm him”
When a person sincerely seeks refuge in Allah, they are reminded of His commands. This remembrance helps guide them away from harm and misguidance. The actions encouraged by Allah include:
- Helping others and giving charity

Quran 2:153 – O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient. - Seeking forgiveness and repenting from sins

Quranic Context:
📖Quran 41:36
And if an evil suggestion comes to you from Satan, then seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing.
— This verse directly supports seeking refuge when troubled by whispers or fears, just as the Prophet ﷺ instructed.
📖Quran 23:97-98
And say, “My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the suggestions of the devils. And I seek refuge in You, my Lord, lest they be present with me.”
— Exactly in line with the hadith’s dua, protecting the believer from devilish presence in sleep or wakefulness.
📖Quran 2:268
Satan threatens you with poverty and commands you to immorality, but Allah promises you forgiveness from Him and bounty.
— Shows how Satan instills fear and negative thoughts, but Allah’s words repel that harm.
