Hypocrites are lost wandering in unbelief
📖Sahih Muslim 2784
Ibn Umar reported: The Prophet ﷺ said, “The parable of the hypocrite is that of a sheep wandering from flock to flock. It wanders to this at times and to another at times.”
Meaning & Lessons:
This hadith exposes the unstable and wavering nature of the hypocrite. Just like a sheep that doesn’t remain loyal to any one flock and wanders aimlessly, a hypocrite moves between groups, ideologies, or beliefs – seeking benefit, hiding their true self, and never firmly committing to the truth. It shows lack of loyalty, truth, and trustworthiness, They follow trends, groups, and ideologies not because of conviction but for self-gain. In today’s context, this can be seen in people who align with whatever is popular, avoid religious commitment, and change their stance based on worldly benefit.
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 2:8
And among the people are some who say, “We believe in Allah and the Last Day,” but they are not believers.
They say one thing but mean another lying for benefit, not belief.
📖Quran 4:143
Wavering between this and that—belonging neither to these nor to those. And whoever Allah leaves to stray, you will never find a way for them.
Exactly like the sheep not loyal, always in between, and misled.
📖Quran 63:1
When the hypocrites come to you, they say, “We bear witness that you are truly the Messenger of Allah.” And Allah knows that you are truly His Messenger. But Allah bears witness that the hypocrites are truly liars.
Their tongue says one thing, their heart hides another.
📖Quran 4:143
“Wavering between them, belonging neither to the believers nor to the disbelievers. Whomever Allah leaves astray—you will never find a way for him.”
— Describes those who cannot commit firmly, always switching sides.
📖Quran 63:4
“They are the enemy, so beware of them. May Allah destroy them! How are they deluded?”
— Hypocrites present a false image, yet their hearts are corrupt.
Modern Reflection:
- Claiming to follow Islam, but admiring Western lifestyles – Copying their fashion, speech, media habits, and ideologies while ignoring Islamic teachings.
- Supporting LGBTQ+ rights in public for likes or jobs, while privately calling it wrong. Hypocrisy is when you sell your deen for social acceptance.
- Wearing hijab for modesty, but dressing in tight clothes and dancing on social media. The purpose is lost.
- Condemning Western wars, but loving their culture.
- Changing religious views based on trends. One day they say interest (riba) is haram, next day they justify crypto, NFTs, or bank jobs.
- Being spiritual but not religious. That’s just code for “I worship my feelings, not Allah.”
- Using Islam for marriage or business gains. Saying “I want a pious spouse” while being addicted to porn or zina yourself.
- Celebrating non-Muslim festivals for “fun.” Christmas, Halloween, Holi – then crying “Islamophobia” when your identity is erased.
- Following feminist ideas that go against Islam. Demanding “gender equality” but rejecting Qur’anic gender roles. That’s ideological wandering.
