Gabriel’s Reminder to Treat Neighbors Well
📖Sahih al-Bukhari 6015, Sahih Muslim 2625
Ibn Umar reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Gabriel did not stop instructing me to treat neighbors well until I thought he would make them my heirs.”
This hadith emphasizes the importance of treating neighbors with kindness and respect, regardless of whether they are Muslim or non-Muslim. The Prophet ﷺ was repeatedly reminded by Gabriel – the angel of guidance – of this duty, highlighting that neighborly rights are of great significance in Islam. Just as inheritance rights are serious and protected, good treatment of neighbors carries enormous reward and moral responsibility.
Gabriel’s repeated instruction shows that angels can convey divine guidance and reminders to the Prophet ﷺ, supporting the Qur’anic principle that Allah sends messengers and angels to guide humanity.
📖Quran 2:97
Say, “Whoever is an enemy to Gabriel — for he brings it down upon your heart by Allah’s permission, confirming what was before it and guidance and good tidings for the believers.”
This verse confirms that Gabriel was directly involved in conveying guidance to the Prophet ﷺ.
📖Quran 66:6
O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones, over which are [appointed] angels, harsh and severe; they do not disobey Allah in what He commands them and do what they are commanded.
Shows angels act by Allah’s command to guide, protect, and instruct.
What We Learn Today:
- Neighborly rights are essential and extend to all neighbors, Muslim or non-Muslim.
- Kindness and generosity toward neighbors is a continuous duty, not occasional.
- Angels can remind and guide, but humans are accountable for acting on the guidance.
- Islam emphasizes social responsibility and peaceful coexistence.
Quranic Context on Neighborly Treatment:
📖Quran 4:36
Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and show kindness to parents, relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the distant neighbor, the companion at your side, the traveler, and those whom your right hands possess. Indeed, Allah does not like those who are self-deluding and boastful.
📖Quran 16:90
Indeed, Allah commands justice, good conduct, and giving to relatives; and forbids immorality, bad conduct, and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.
Treating neighbors well is a recurring, serious obligation in Islam. Gabriel’s repeated instruction to the Prophet ﷺ shows its high status. It applies to everyone, Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Being mindful of neighbors today, offering help, respect, and protection, fulfills a timeless Islamic teaching.
