Perform Sunan prayers in your home

📖Sahih al-Bukhari 432, Sahih Muslim 208
Ibn Umar reported: The Prophet ﷺ said, “Perform your voluntary prayers in your houses, and do not take your houses as graves.”

This hadith shows balance:

  • Obligatory prayers (fard): Best in the masjid, because the Prophet ﷺ emphasized congregation.
  • Voluntary prayers (nafl, sunnah): Best at home, so that houses remain alive with worship, not spiritually dead.

Islam also allows mercy: if someone is sick, weak, bored, or has a genuine reason (rain, fear, hardship), they can pray at home without blame. Allah rewards based on intention.

📖Sahih al-Bukhari 2996
“If a servant falls ill or travels, Allah writes for him the reward of what he used to do when he was healthy and residing.”

But going to the masjid is more than just prayer — it builds unity:

  • Muslims meet each other daily, check on the sick, and help the needy.
  • They share news, guidance, and solve problems together.
  • The masjid becomes the heart of the community, where decisions can be made in light of Islam.

This was the practice of the Prophet ﷺ and his companions. They used the masjid not only for prayer, but also as a place of teaching, consultation, and helping people.

📖Sahih al-Bukhari 649
“The prayer in congregation is twenty-seven times more superior to the prayer offered by a person alone.”

This hadith covers exceptions: when a person is sick or traveling, Allah writes for him the same reward as what he used to do regularly while healthy. So, if someone always prayed in the mosque but then got sick, Allah will still give him the reward of congregational prayer, even if he cannot attend.

So together they mean:

  • If you’re healthy → try to pray in congregation for 27x reward.
  • If you’re sick/traveling → Allah still writes the same reward as if you had prayed in congregation, because of your regular intention and habit.

This hadith encourages Muslims who are healthy and able to attend the masjid to choose the better option: praying in congregation, which earns much greater reward than praying alone.

Why it is more rewardable:

  • Hardship & effort – leaving home, walking to the masjid, and arranging time for prayer requires sacrifice, which increases reward.
  • Unity of believers –  standing shoulder to shoulder builds brotherhood and equality in worship.
  • Helping & supporting others – you strengthen the weak in faith, and they strengthen you.
  • Avoiding laziness & hypocrisy – praying with others prevents neglect and keeps one disciplined.
  • Visible sign of Islam – the jama’ah prayer makes Islam alive in the community.
  • Angels’ presence – the Prophet ﷺ said angels pray for those in congregation until they finish.
  • Safety from Shaytan – the Prophet ﷺ compared the lone sheep being attacked by a wolf to the lone Muslim being attacked by Shaytan.
  • Learning & correction – people learn Qur’an, tajweed, and Sunnah by praying behind an imam.
  • Consistency – regular jama’ah prayer builds habit and connection to the masjid.

So, the reward is multiplied because you are not just praying for yourself – you’re strengthening the whole Ummah.

📖Sunan Ibn Majah 793
Whoever hears the call to prayer and does not come to the mosque, there is no prayer for him except with an excuse.”

Any valid reason allowed to pray at home but it will reduce reward – the reward does not only mean extra hasanat, it can also be something that protects you from sickness, disaster, accident, or for the Hereafter. But if a person has no reason at all and still does not go after hearing the call, that makes it invalid even if he prays at home. The prayer must be based on a reason, even something like feeling unwell or exhausted.

Quranic Context:

📖Quran 24:36-37
In houses which Allah has ordered to be raised and that His name be mentioned therein, exalting Him within them in the morning and the evenings. Men whom neither commerce nor sale distracts from the remembrance of Allah, performing prayer and giving zakah, and they fear a Day in which hearts and eyes will be overturned.

This shows Allah praises those who gather in mosques for worship, and who are united by faith instead of being distracted by worldly matters.

📖Quran 73:20
…So recite what is easy from the Qur’an. He has known that there will be among you those who are ill and others traveling throughout the land seeking of the bounty of Allah and others fighting in the cause of Allah. So recite what is easy from it and establish prayer and give zakah and loan Allah a goodly loan.

This verse shows Allah’s mercy: those who are ill, traveling, or busy with hardship can pray in their own capacity — which includes praying at home.
