Avoid Excess in Worship
📖Sunan Abī Dāwūd 4904
Anas ibn Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Do not be hard upon yourselves, lest the matter be made severe upon you. Verily, if people are hard upon themselves, Allah will be hard upon them. Their remnants are in the monasteries and abbeys.”
Then the Prophet recited the verse:
Quran 57:27 – “Then We sent Our messengers after them, and We sent Jesus, the son of Mary, and gave him the Gospel. And We placed in the hearts of those who followed him compassion and mercy. But monasticism they invented; We did not prescribe it for them; only seeking Allah’s pleasure. But they did not observe it as it should have been observed, so We gave those who believed among them their reward, and many of them are defiantly disobedient.”
Description
This hadith warns against unnecessary strictness in religious practice. Islam encourages balance, mercy, and ease, not extreme self-imposed hardships. Historically, some Christians invented extreme monastic practices without divine instruction, leading to neglect of proper obligations.
Today, similar behaviors include:
- Excessive glorification of graves or shrine visits
- Milad-un-Nabi celebrations or rituals not prescribed in the Sunnah
- Commemorations of Karbala or other events with extreme self-punishment or innovations
- Overly strict asceticism, fasting beyond what Allah prescribed
- Creating rigid or innovative rituals that were not ordained
What It Means Today
- Avoid self-imposed extremism: Adding restrictions beyond what Allah has legislated leads to hardship.
- Religion is ease: Islam promotes balance, not extremes.
- Stick to the Sunnah: Follow what is prescribed and avoid innovation in acts of worship.
- Learn from history: Excessive self-denial, grave glorification, or invented rituals can lead to deviation.
Lessons for Us
- Do not overburden yourself with acts Allah did not command.
- Avoid the trap of extremism – it leads to harm and spiritual failure.
- Maintain balance in life and worship, including worldly responsibilities.
- Recognize modern examples of extremism, such as grave glorification, Milad-un-Nabi, Karbala commemorations, or unnecessary ascetic practices.
