Grave sin to belittle a believer
📖Sunan Abī Dāwūd 4875
Aisha reported: I said to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, “Safiyyah is enough for you as such,” making fun of her short stature. The Prophet said, “You have said a word that would pollute the sea if mixed with it!” She said, “I had caricatured someone before.” The Prophet said, “I do not like to caricature someone for any reason.
This hadith shows how even a small insult or mocking remark carries great weight in Islam. The Prophet ﷺ compared it to polluting the vast sea, meaning one harmful word can spread immense corruption. He made it clear that belittling or mocking someone, even in jest, is not tolerated in Islam.
What does it mean?
- Making fun of someone’s physical appearance, background, or weaknesses is a serious sin in Allah’s sight.
- Words may seem light on the tongue, but their consequences are heavy.
- The Prophet ﷺ emphasized that no excuse justifies mocking or caricaturing others.
Lessons from this hadith
- Mockery and insults pollute the purity of one’s heart and society.
- A single harmful word can weigh heavily with Allah.
- Even the Mother of the Believers, Aisha (RA), was corrected – showing that no one is beyond accountability.
- Caricaturing or joking at someone’s expense is against prophetic character.
- Respect and honor for every Muslim is obligatory, regardless of appearance or status.
What we learn today:
- Social media and daily conversations are filled with mocking, body shaming, and sarcastic humor at others’ expense -this hadith warns us against it.
- Online “roasts,” memes, and jokes that humiliate others can spiritually pollute a person’s record just like Aisha’s single remark.
- True believers should speak words of kindness or remain silent.
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 49:11
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them. Nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by offensive nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after one’s faith. And whoever does not repent – it is they who are the wrongdoers.
📖Quran 50:18
Not a word does he utter but that with him is an observer prepared [to record].
