Rinsing the mouth after drinking milk

📖Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 208, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 358
Ibn Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, drank some milk and rinsed his mouth. The Prophet said, “It contains fatty grease.

This hadith highlights the Prophet’s ﷺ awareness of health and cleanliness. When he said, “It contains fatty grease,” he was pointing out that milk naturally leaves behind a layer of fat in the mouth. That greasy coating can cling to the tongue, teeth, and gums, and rinsing removes it, keeping the mouth fresh and clean.

  • Science today confirms exactly this: milk contains fat globules made up of triglycerides, phospholipids, and cholesterol. These globules are emulsified in water but still leave a greasy film on surfaces they touch – including inside the mouth. That is why after drinking milk, especially full-fat milk, people feel a coating or heaviness in their mouth. Modern nutrition and dental science agree that rinsing helps wash away these fatty residues, reducing bacterial growth and protecting oral health.

General fat globules (lipid droplets):

  • Found in most cells of the body.
  • They store triglycerides and other fats inside a hydrophobic core wrapped in a phospholipid membrane.
  • They serve as energy storage units for the body.

Milk Fat Globules (MFGs):

  • A special type of fat globule, formed in the mammary gland cells of mammals.
  • They are droplets of triglycerides released into milk, coated with a membrane containing proteins and phospholipids.
  • They range in size (about 1–8 μm) and are what give milk its fatty/creamy texture.
  • When consumed, they can coat the mouth and leave a greasy film – exactly what the Prophet ﷺ described as “fatty grease.

So:

  • The hadith description “fatty grease” is a simple way of describing what science now calls milk fat globules (MFGs).
  • These MFGs are microscopic lipid droplets that make up the butterfat in milk.
  • Modern science studies them as part of nutrition, digestion, and dairy processing – but in daily life, people simply experience them as a greasy coating after drinking milk.

Quranic Context:

📖Quran 16:66
And indeed, for you in grazing livestock is a lesson. We give you drink from what is in their bellies—between digested matter and blood—pure milk, palatable to drink for those who consume it.

Milk is pure and a blessing, but the Prophet ﷺ taught that maintaining cleanliness after drinking it is equally important.
