Your Past Good Deeds Count When You Embrace Islam
📖Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 123
Hakim ibn Hizam reported: He said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, “What do you think of the acts of worship I did in the time of ignorance. Will I get anything from them?” The Prophet ﷺ said, “You have embraced Islam with the good you previously did.”
Meaning:
This Hadith highlights Allah’s mercy and the value of good deeds even before one embraces Islam. Hakim ibn Hizam was concerned that his past acts of worship or good deeds performed while unaware of Islam might be meaningless. The Prophet ﷺ reassured him that all sincere good actions, done with the right intention, are recognized and rewarded by Allah, and that embracing Islam amplifies and completes their spiritual benefit.
Good Deeds Before Islam Count as Reward:
- Acts of kindness, charity, or worship done sincerely – even if before accepting Islam – are not wasted.
- Allah judges deeds based on intention and sincerity, not merely the timing or religious label.
- Embracing Islam builds upon previous good deeds, so a person’s past efforts continue to benefit them spiritually.
What We Learn Today:
- Never feel that past good actions were meaningless, even if you were unaware of the full guidance of Islam at the time.
- Sincerity is the key: Allah rewards intentions and sincere efforts.
- Embrace Islam fully and continue good actions—past and present deeds together form a foundation for spiritual growth.
- Encourages hope and positivity: No matter one’s past, sincere goodness is recognized and valued by Allah.
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 4:131
To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. We have instructed those who were given the Scripture before you and you, to fear Allah. And if you disbelieve — then to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And ever is Allah Free of need and Praiseworthy.
📖Quran 49:13
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
These verses reinforce that righteousness and sincere good actions are what matter, regardless of the time or circumstances. Past efforts done with sincerity are acknowledged and rewarded by Allah, especially when one embraces Islam fully.
