Eating Without Reclining for Better Health
📖Sahih al-Bukhari 5398
Abu Juhayfah reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “I do not eat while reclining.”
Explanation & Wisdom
This hadith reflects the simplicity, humility, and health-conscious habits of the Prophet ﷺ. Reclining while eating was a practice of the wealthy as a sign of arrogance. The Prophet ﷺ avoided it for two main reasons:
- Humility – Eating upright reflects simplicity and gratitude.
- Health – Proper posture during eating ensures good digestion.
Scientific & Medical Perspective
Modern science supports this Sunnah:
- Better Digestion: Sitting upright while eating promotes better digestion compared to reclining. Reclining can slow down the movement of food from the esophagus to the stomach, potentially leading to acid reflux and indigestion.
- Reduced Risk of GERD: Reclining increases the risk of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) by allowing stomach acid to move upward.
- Smooth Swallowing & Safety: Eating while lying down or leaning heavily increases the chance of choking.
- Optimal Nutrient Absorption: Upright posture aids in smooth passage of food, supporting nutrient absorption.

Qur’anic Context
Islam emphasizes moderation and avoiding harmful practices:
📖Surah Al-A’raf 7:31
“Eat and drink, but do not be excessive. Indeed, He does not like those who commit excess.”
Eating in positions of pride and comfort was linked to extravagance. The Prophet ﷺ chose humility and health.
📖Surah Taha (20:81)
“Eat from the good things We have provided for you, but do not transgress therein, or My anger will befall you.”
This includes avoiding habits that harm the body and soul.
