Three Components of Good Character
📖Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2005
Abu Wahb narrated that: ‘Abdullah bin Al-Mubarak explained good character, and then he said: “It is a smiling face, doing one’s best in good, and refraining from harm.”
This definition of good character is simple but powerful. It captures the true spirit of Islam:
- A smiling face – Spreading warmth and positivity, not arrogance or gloom.
- Doing one’s best in good – Actively helping others, showing kindness, fulfilling duties.
- Refraining from harm – Not hurting others physically, emotionally, or even with words.
This shows that good character is not only about what we do — but also about what we choose not to do. The Prophet ﷺ was the perfect role model of this balance. His face lit up with a smile, his hands were always open in service, and his tongue never wounded people with cruelty.
And this character wasn’t just a personal habit – it was deeply rooted in the commands of the Qur’an.
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 3:159
And by the Mercy of Allah, you were gentle with them. Had you been harsh or hard-hearted, they would have dispersed from around you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in matters.
Gentleness is the core of good character. Without it, people drift away even if you’re right.
📖Quran 41:34
Good and evil are not equal. Repel evil with what is better, and you will see that the one who was once your enemy will become as close as a devoted friend.
This shows the power of good character – even enemies soften when treated with kindness.
📖Quran 2:83
…Speak to people good words and establish prayer and give zakah…
Even speech matters. Good character isn’t just what’s in your heart – it’s what comes out of your mouth and hands.
The message is clear: character is action + restraint. And Islam demands both.
