Shirk, Disrespect to Parents, and Lying

📖Sahih al-Bukhari 2654, Sahih Muslim 87
Abu Bakrah reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said three times, “Shall I not tell you about the worst of major sins?” They said, “Of course, O Messenger of Allah.” The Prophet said, “They are to associate partners with Allah and to be disrespectful to parents.” Then, the Prophet sat up after reclining, saying, “And surely to speak falsely.” The Prophet continued repeating it until we said to ourselves, “Would that he stop!”

This Hadith highlights some of the gravest sins a person can commit: shirk (associating partners with Allah), disrespecting parents, and lying. Repeating it three times emphasizes the severity of these actions. These are only some of the major sins; many others exist, which have been discussed in detail in other articles. Studying them one by one provides a complete understanding of what Islam considers gravely sinful and what behaviors to avoid.

Quranic Context:

📖Quran 4:36
Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and show kindness to parents, relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the distant neighbor, the companion at your side, the traveler, and those whom your right hands possess. Indeed, Allah does not like those who are arrogant and boastful.

📖Quran 17:23
And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], “uff,” and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word.

📖Quran 22:30
So avoid the uncleanliness of idols and avoid false speech.
