Loving Allah, His Messenger, and His Family

📖Sunan al-Tirmidhi 3789
Ibn Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Love Allah for the blessings by which He nourishes you, love me for the love of Allah, and love the people of my house for the love of me.”

Description:
This hadith highlights three essential layers of love in Islam. Each one builds upon the other, forming a chain that leads a believer closer to Allah. The Prophet ﷺ connected love of Allah, love of himself, and love of his family – showing that true faith is not only belief, but also loyalty, gratitude, and obedience.

Types of Love Mentioned:

1. Love Allah for His blessings

  • He gave you life
  • Health and strength
  • Wealth and sustenance
  • Children and family
  • Endless favors seen and unseen

 2. Love the Prophet ﷺ for the sake of Allah

  • Obey his commands
  • Follow his sunnah
  • Believe in his message
  • Respect his role as the final Messenger
  • Show loyalty because Allah commanded it

3. Love the Ahl al-Bayt (the family of the Prophet ﷺ)

  • Loving them means honoring their closeness to the Prophet ﷺ
  • Following their good example in faith and piety
  • Supporting them in truth and righteousness
  • Recognizing that their guidance leads back to Allah, since Allah commanded love for them
  • The Prophet ﷺ compared this love to a chain that connects us back to Allah through him

Quranic Context:

📖Quran 16:18
And if you should count the favors of Allah, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

📖Quran 3:31
Say, [O Muhammad], “If you love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you and forgive your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.”

📖Quran 33:21
There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent example for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day, and [who] remembers Allah often.

📖Quran 42:23
Say, “I do not ask you for this message any payment, except to love my near relatives.” And whoever earns good – We will increase for him in good. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Appreciative.

Meaning:
While this verse was revealed about the Prophet’s family, its principle extends beyond them. It teaches Muslims a model to use in their own lives: when calling others to Islam, we are not asking for wealth, power, or personal gain – only love, respect, and goodness. Just as the Prophet ﷺ asked people to love his relatives for Allah’s sake, Muslims can also say: “Do not repay me with wealth, but show love, kindness, and goodness.
