Seeking Knowledge as a Duty
📖Sunan Ibn Majah 224
Anas bin Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Seeking knowledge is a duty upon every Muslim, and he who imparts knowledge to those who do not deserve it, is like one who puts a necklace of jewels, pearls and gold around the neck of swines.”
Description:
This hadith emphasizes two major principles:
-
Seeking knowledge is obligatory for every Muslim — not just scholars or imams, but every man and woman. It’s a religious duty like prayer and fasting.
-
Not all knowledge should be shared with everyone. Teaching sacred knowledge to those who mock it, reject it, or disrespect it is like adorning pigs with gold, they neither understand its value nor respect it.
What is “Knowledge” in Islam?
In this hadith, ‘knowledge’ (ʿilm) refers to:
-
Religious knowledge — knowing Allah, understanding the Qur’an, Hadith, rules of prayer, fasting, halal & haram, etc.
-
Wisdom and ethics — the ability to apply knowledge correctly in different situations.
-
Useful worldly knowledge — science, medicine, law, etc., as long as it helps humanity and aligns with Islamic principles.
The purpose of knowledge in Islam is not just to gain information but to act on it, improve oneself, and serve the Ummah.
Who “does not deserve” knowledge?
The Prophet ﷺ warns us against sharing sacred teachings with:
- Those who mock or twist religion.
- Those who use knowledge for corruption, argument, or personal gain.
- People with bad character who will misuse what they learn.
Teaching them is like wasting the most valuable thing on those who will not only fail to benefit — but may also dishonor it.
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 58:11
Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees. And Allah is aware of what you do.
📖Quran 96:1-5
Recite in the name of your Lord who created. Created man from a clinging substance. Recite, and your Lord is the Most Generous—Who taught by the pen—Taught man that which he knew not.
📖Quran 2:269
He gives wisdom to whom He wills, and whoever has been given wisdom has certainly been given much good. But none will remember except people of understanding.
Islam honors knowledge but also teaches us to protect it from misuse. We must seek it sincerely, act upon it humbly, and share it wisely.
