The Desire for Death
📖Sahih al-Bukhari 7115
Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet ﷺ said, “The Hour will not be established till a man passes by a grave of somebody and says, ‘Would that I were in his place.’”
Explanation:
This Hadith is a prophecy about a time of extreme hardship and hopelessness, when people will feel so overwhelmed that they will envy the dead, not because of love or respect for them, but because they wish to escape their own suffering. This is a warning sign of how difficult and dark the times before the Day of Judgment will be, filled with chaos, war, injustice, oppression, and spiritual emptiness.
Why Would Someone Think This?
- Constant oppression or injustice
- Extreme poverty or famine
- Loss of loved ones or family
- Mental pain and depression
- Fitnah (trials) in religion and society
- Global corruption and wars
- Loss of hope in the mercy of Allah (which is a major danger)
The Prophet ﷺ Warned Not to Wish for Death
📖Sahih al-Bukhari 5671
Anas narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Let none of you wish for death due to a calamity that has befallen him. But if he must wish for it, then let him say: ‘O Allah, keep me alive as long as life is better for me, and cause me to die when death is better for me.’”
This shows that Islam does not support hopelessness. Even in suffering, a believer is taught to have sabr (patience) and trust in Allah’s plan. Wishing for death due to despair is a sign of weak faith, and it’s a spiritual disease that must be cured with prayer, patience, and remembrance of Allah.
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 4:29
Do not kill yourselves. Surely Allah is ever Merciful to you.
📖Quran 94:6
Indeed, with hardship comes ease.
📖Quran 39:53
Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins.
