Importance of thanking people in Islam
📖Sunan Abi Dawud 4811
Narrated Abu Hurayrah: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “He who does not thank the people is not thankful to Allah.”
This powerful hadith reminds us that gratitude is not just a feeling in the heart — it’s an action. The Prophet ﷺ is teaching us that if we fail to thank people who help us, support us, or do good for us, we are showing ingratitude not only to them but also to Allah. Why? Because Allah is the One who sends blessings to us through other people. If we ignore their efforts, we are ignoring Allah’s wisdom in using them as a means for our benefit.
Gratitude is a sign of humility. It shows that we acknowledge the favors we receive, whether directly from Allah or through His creation. Islam teaches us to appreciate both.
✅ How to be thankful to people:
- Say “JazakAllah Khair” or “Thank you” sincerely.
- Publicly acknowledge someone’s help or kindness.
- Support and help them in return when they are in need.
- Never belittle or forget a favor someone did for you.
- Show respect and pray for those who helped you.
✅ How to show gratitude to Allah:
- Regularly say Alhamdulillah (All praise is due to Allah).
- Pray on time and fulfill acts of worship sincerely.
- Use Allah’s blessings (wealth, health, time) in good ways.
- Avoid sins and stay away from arrogance or entitlement.
- Recognize that everything even people helping us, is from Allah.
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 14:7
And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed: “If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.”
This increase does not mean Allah will give you whatever you want, rather, He will increase you in things that are good for you: stronger faith, more wisdom, contentment, patience, or beneficial provisions. It’s not based on desires, but on what benefits your soul and your path to Him.
