Final deeds determine fate in Hereafter
📖Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 6607
Sahl ibn Sa’d reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, Verily, the deeds are only judged by their endings.
Explanation:
This hadith emphasizes that the ultimate value of a person’s actions is determined by how they conclude their life. No matter how many good deeds one performs, if a person dies as a non-believer or in disobedience to Allah, their earlier deeds may not benefit them. The “ending” refers to the state of one’s faith and submission to Allah at the time of death.
Lesson for Today:
- Always strive to maintain faith until the very end of life.
- Continuously seek repentance and purification of the heart.
- Avoid complacency; good deeds alone do not guarantee reward if faith is lost.
- Life is a test, and true success depends on dying in a state of belief and obedience to Allah.
Qur’anic Context:
📖Quran 3:85
“And whoever desires other than Islam as religion—never will it be accepted from him, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers.”
📖Quran 6:93
“And if Allah had willed, they would not have done it; so leave them and their inventions. And whoever dies a disbeliever—upon them is the wrath of Allah, and for them is a severe punishment.”
📖Quran 3:91
“Indeed, those who disbelieve and die while they are disbelievers – never will the [whole] earth’s wealth be accepted from one of them, even if he offers it as ransom. For them is a painful punishment, and they will have no helpers.”
This verse establishes that those who knowingly die as disbelievers will not benefit from their deeds or wealth in the Hereafter.
- Musnad Aḥmad 16301
It is reported in Musnad Ahmad that on the Day of Judgment, some people will be brought before Allah and will say: “O Lord, I did not know/I was old/young and did not receive the message.” Allah will then test them, and their response will determine their fate. - Quran 16:126 –
“And We never punish until We have sent a messenger.”
This shows Allah’s justice and mercy: those who never had the opportunity to learn about Islam or were genuinely unaware are excused, but this does not apply to those who knowingly reject the truth or are deliberately misguided.
