The Importance of Justice and Kindness
đJami` at-Tirmidhi 1940
Abu Sirmah narrated that the Messenger of Allah ï·ș said âWhoever causes harm, Allah harms him, and whoever is harsh, Allah will be harsh with him.â
Description:
This Hadith is a direct warning from the Prophet ï·ș to every human being, not just Muslims. It doesnât say “whoever harms a believer” or “whoever is harsh with Muslims” it says âwhoever.â That includes your neighbors, your spouse, a stranger, even non-Muslims.
This is a universal principle of divine justice:
â Harm others, and Allah will harm you.
â Be harsh, and Allah will be harsh with you.
Whether itâs emotional harm, betrayal, cruelty, oppression, or even silence when others are being wronged â Allah sees it all, and He repays it.
This Hadith flips the script, it’s not about who you harmed, but about the kind of person you are. You donât need to be a war criminal to face Allahâs anger. Just being needlessly cruel, cold, or unjust is enough for divine retribution.
Types of Harm This Covers:
- Physical harm: Abuse, assault, murder, even bullying
- Emotional harm: Manipulation, gaslighting, betrayal
- Social harm: Backbiting, slander, false accusations
- Economic harm: Stealing, cheating, unfair business
- Religious harm: Mocking someoneâs faith, or misguiding them intentionally
Yes, it includes Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Because oppression and cruelty are condemned in Islam no matter who theyâre aimed at.
Qur’anic Context:
đQuran 42:40
The recompense for an evil is an evil like it, but whoever pardons and makes reconciliationâhis reward is with Allah.
Justice is allowed â but mercy is better. Allah sees who causes harm and who chooses to reconcile.
đQuran 4:36
Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and be kind to parents, relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the distant neighbor, the companion at your side, the traveler, and those whom your right hands possess. Indeed, Allah does not like those who are arrogant and boastful.
Allah commands kindness to everyone â even your distant neighbor and those under your authority. Thereâs no room for cruelty.
đQuran 28:83
That home of the Hereafter We assign to those who do not desire exaltedness upon the earth or corruption. And the [best] outcome is for the righteous.
Harshness and harm often come from arrogance and pride. But Allah says: Paradise is not for those who act superior or spread harm.
