The Seriousness of Bloodshed
📖 Sahih Muslim 1678 a
‘Abdullah b. Mas’ud reported: Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said: “The first (thing) that will be decided among people on the Day of Judgment will pertain to bloodshed.”
Explanation:
This hadith reveals the extreme seriousness of bloodshed (unjust killing or physical harm) in the sight of Allah. It is not limited to murder alone, it also includes injuring, harming, or spilling the blood of another person unjustly.
- The fact that this is the first matter to be judged shows its priority and weight in the scale of divine justice.
- It emphasizes that no harm goes unnoticed, and anyone who kills or harms another unjustly will be held accountable before anything else, even before prayer, fasting, or charity.
- Islam regards the sanctity of life as sacred, and violating it without due right is one of the gravest sins.
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 5:32
“Whoever kills a soul, unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land, it is as if he had slain all mankind. And whoever saves one, it is as if he had saved all mankind…”
This verse mirrors the gravity shown in the hadith:
-
Taking a single innocent life unjustly is equated to the destruction of all humanity.
-
It reflects the divine scale of value placed upon every individual life.
📖Quran 17:33
“Do not kill the soul which Allah has made sacred except by right. And whoever is killed unjustly, We have given his heir the authority, but let him not exceed limits in [the matter of] taking life. Indeed, he has been supported [by the law].”
This verse establishes that:
-
Life is sacred and must not be violated without just cause.
-
Even when justice is sought, it must remain within the boundaries set by Allah.
