Fighting for the Sake of Allah
📖Sahih al-Bukhari 123
Narrated Abu Musa: A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and asked, “O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)! What kind of fighting is in Allah’s cause? (I ask this), for some of us fight because of being enraged and angry and some for the sake of his pride and haughtiness.” The Prophet (ﷺ) raised his head (as the questioner was standing) and said: “He who fights so that Allah’s Word (Islam) should be superior, then he fights in Allah’s cause.”
Real Meaning of Fighting in Islam
This hadith destroys the false idea that any kind of fighting or violence is automatically “jihad” or Islamic. The Prophet ﷺ clarified: Fighting in the name of ego, pride, anger, or nationalism is not in Allah’s cause. The only legitimate fight is to uphold the truth, defend the oppressed, and raise the Word of Allah, nothing more.
And “fighting” doesn’t always mean weapons. It also means:
- Standing against injustice,
- Speaking the truth when it’s risky,
- Defending someone who is wronged,
- Even struggling against one’s own ego and desires.
🛡️ Physical Fight = Only in Justified Defense
Islam never allows senseless bloodshed. Even in war, the rules are strict:
- No killing innocents
- No harming non-combatants
- No torture or destruction
- If enemy surrenders or offers peace, Muslims must accept
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 4:75
“And what is [the matter] with you that you fight not in the cause of Allah and [for] the oppressed among men, women, and children who say, ‘Our Lord, take us out of this city of oppressive people and appoint for us from Yourself a protector and appoint for us from Yourself a helper?'”
This verse commands fighting, not for greed or revenge, but to protect the weak, the voiceless, the abused.
📖Quran 2:190
“Fight in the way of Allah those who fight you but do not transgress. Indeed, Allah does not like transgressors.”
You fight only those who attack you first. Islam never promotes aggression, it promotes justice.
📖Quran 8:61
“And if they incline to peace, then incline to it [also] and rely upon Allah. Indeed, it is He who is the Hearing, the Knowing.”
If the enemy stops fighting and offers peace, you must accept it. No revenge. No pride. Just peace.
Islam = Justice, Not Violence
So the true fight in Islam is never about dominance or hatred, It’s about justice, protection, truth, and always under rules set by Allah, Anyone who fights for ego, pride, politics, or nationalism is not fighting for Allah, even if they say otherwise.
