Respecting the Dignity of the Deceased
📖Sahih al-Bukhari 1312, 1313
Narrated Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila: Sahl bin Hunaif and Qais bin Sad were sitting in the city of Al-Qadisiyyah. A funeral procession passed in front of them and they stood up. They were told that the funeral was of one of the inhabitants of the land (a non-believer under Muslim protection). They said, “A funeral procession passed in front of the Prophet ﷺ and he stood up. When he was told that it was the coffin of a Jew, he said, ‘Is it not a living being (soul)?’”
This Hadith teaches dignity and respect even for those who don’t share our faith. The Prophet ﷺ stood up for a non-Muslim’s funeral, not because of their religion, but because they had a soul. That alone was enough for him to honor them, This is a lesson for many today who have forgotten the basic adab (manners) of Islam. Mocking the dead, rejoicing over someone’s death, or spreading their sins after death, especially on social media—is NOT from the Sunnah. Whether a person was Muslim or not, righteous or sinful, alive or dead, judgment belongs to Allah, and dignity belongs to every human soul.
What if the person was evil?
Even if someone was a known criminal, tyrant, or rapist—Islam teaches that after death, we don’t mock or curse them publicly. Why?
-
Because their case is now with Allah.
-
Because constantly speaking evil of the dead harms the living—those who are hurt, grieving, or influenced by their story.
-
Because even the worst people deserve silence if not forgiveness after death—because we too will one day die.
📖Sahih al-Bukhari 6516
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Do not abuse the dead, for they have reached the result of what they put forth.”
If someone did injustice in life, they are now facing Allah’s judgment—not ours. Speaking evil of them after death won’t bring justice—, it only hardens our own hearts.
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 17:70
And We have certainly honored the children of Adam and carried them on the land and sea and provided for them of the good things and preferred them over much of what We have created, with [definite] preference.
📖Quran 5:8
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness.
📖Quran 49:11
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule another people—perhaps they may be better than them…
If You Know the Person Was a Murderer or Rapist:
-
You’re not required to speak good about them.
-
You can dislike them for what they did.
-
You can condemn their actions.
-
But Islam teaches: don’t make a show of mocking or cursing them after death.
-
-
Silence is strength.
-
If the person was truly evil, Allah will deal with them far better than your words ever could.
-
Cursing the dead won’t undo their crimes.
-
It only harms your own heart and removes the dignity of your character.
