he Prophet’s supplication at funerals
📖Sunan al-Tirmidhī 1024
Abu Ibrahim al-Ash’hali reported: When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, performed the funeral prayer, he would say, “O Allah, forgive our living and our deceased, those of us present and those of us absent, our young and our old, our men and our women. O Allah, for whomever you give life among us, give him life upon Islam. For whomever you take among us, take him upon faith.
This hadith shows the Prophet’s comprehensive mercy and concern for the entire community – men and women, young and old, those present and absent. It highlights that life is only meaningful when lived in Islam, and death is only successful when it ends with true faith. The dua also teaches us that the best farewell we can ask for anyone is forgiveness and to depart upon iman.
What we learn today:
We are reminded that our prayers should not be limited to those we know personally but should encompass the entire ummah. It also teaches us to prioritize faith over worldly matters, for the true success is to live and die as a believer. This hadith also strengthens the communal spirit, showing that we carry responsibility for each other in life and after death through dua.
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 3:102
O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].
📖Quran 2:286
Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we forget or make a mistake. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people.
📖Quran 59:10
And those who came after them say, “Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith and put not in our hearts any resentment toward those who have believed. Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful.”
