Lineage of Prophet Muhammad

📖Sahih Muslim 2276
Wathila b. al-Asqa’ reported: I heard Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: “Verily Allah granted eminence to Kinana from amongst the descendants of Isma’il, and He granted eminence to the Quraish amongst Kinana, and He granted eminence to Banu Hashim amongst the Quraish, and He granted me eminence from the tribe of Banu Hashim.”

Explanation:

This hadith traces a divine chain of honor and selection:

  • From Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) → through Isma’il (Ishmael) → to Kinana → then Quraish → then Banu Hashim → and finally to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

It shows Allah’s divine preference and gradual elevation of tribes and individuals, all leading to the final Messenger.

Quranic Context:

📖Quran 3:33
Indeed, Allah chose Adam, Noah, the family of Abraham, and the family of ‘Imran above all people.

This verse shows that Allah has a divine system of choosing families for Prophethood.
The family of Abraham” includes both his sons: Ishaq (Isaac) and Isma’il (Ishmael).
The Israelites descend from Ishaq, and the Arabs — including Prophet Muhammad ﷺ — descend from Isma’il, making the Prophet part of “the chosen family of Abraham.”

📖Quran 6:87
And from their fathers, their descendants, and their brothers – and We chose them and guided them to a straight path.

This expands on the divine selection of descendants.
It confirms that Allah chooses not just individuals but their entire lineage, including the descendants of Ibrahim and Isma’il, to carry His message or be honored.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, as a descendant of Isma’il, is part of that chosen and guided line.

📖Quran 43:32
Do they distribute the mercy of your Lord? It is We who have apportioned among them their livelihood in the life of this world and raised some of them above others in rank…

This verse directly supports the idea of divine preference.
Just as Allah decides wealth or status, He also chooses tribes, families, and individuals for Prophethood and religious leadership.
The chain of eminence from Kinana → Quraish → Banu Hashim → Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is an example of this divine arrangement.

📖Quran 33:40
Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but he is the Messenger of Allah and the seal of the prophets. And Allah has full knowledge of all things.

This confirms that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the final Messenger, completing the line of Prophethood that began with Ibrahim عليه السلام.
His noble lineage isn’t just historical — it’s part of Allah’s plan for the final message to come through the best of creation, both in character and ancestry.
