Danger of Innovations in Islam

📖Sahih al-Bukhari 6582
Narrated Anas: The Prophet (ï·ș) said, “Some of my companions will come to me at my Lake Fount, and after I recognize them, they will then be taken away from me, whereupon I will say, ‘My companions!’ Then it will be said, ‘You do not know what they innovated (new things) in the religion after you.”

This hadith is a powerful warning against Bid‘ah (innovation) in religion. The Prophet ï·ș made it clear that even some people who were with him during his life, his own companions, would deviate after his death by introducing changes in Islam that he never taught. Because of this, they will be turned away from him on the Day of Judgment. This shows that simply being close to the Prophet isn’t enough, what matters is strictly following the religion as he delivered it, without addition or subtraction.

What is Innovation (Bid’ah)?

Innovation in religion means adding, removing, or altering acts of worship or beliefs in a way that the Prophet ï·ș never approved of. Islam is complete and does not need modification.

Examples of innovation in practice:

  • Prayer (Salah): Islam commands 5 daily prayers. Saying “I’ll do 3 or 6 instead” is innovation.

  • Fasting (Sawm): Ramadan fasting is obligatory. Denying it or creating a new fasting rule not prescribed by Islam is innovation.

  • Eid: Islam has two Eids. Adding a third Eid or canceling Eid is an innovation.

  • Remembrance: Inventing new phrases or formats not taught by the Prophet ï·ș can become innovation if taken as religious obligation.

  • Changing Qur’an meanings: Giving new interpretations that oppose the teachings of the Prophet ï·ș is a dangerous innovation.

  • Celebrating birthdays of Prophets or saints as religious events never done by the Prophet or his companions.

Why Is Innovation So Serious?

Because it alters the religion Allah perfected. It may seem small, but it opens the door to completely changing Islam from what Allah revealed.

Qur’anic Context

📖Quran 5:3
This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as your religion.

📖Quran 24:63
So let those beware who dissent from his (the Prophet’s) order, lest fitnah (trial) strike them or a painful punishment.

📖Quran 33:36
It is not for a believing man or woman—when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter—to have any choice in the matter. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger has clearly gone far astray.

These verses clearly show that Islam is complete, and following the Prophet’s guidance is mandatory. Any deviation, even with good intentions, leads to misguidance.
