Allah Grants Time Before Justice Falls
📖Sahih al-Bukhari 4686, Sahih Muslim 2583
Abu Musa reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, Allah Almighty will give respite to the wrongdoer until He seizes him and they cannot escape.” Then, the Prophet recited the verse, “Such is the seizure of your Lord, when He takes hold of the cities while they are doing wrong. Verily, His seizure is agonizing and severe.” (Quran 11:102)
This hadith highlights that Allah does not immediately punish wrongdoers. Instead, He grants them time. This is part of His wisdom – His justice may be delayed, but when it arrives, it is inescapable and severe.
If Allah punished every wrong instantly, faith would not be a test. People would obey only out of fear of immediate destruction, not out of sincerity. By allowing delay, Allah tests people’s hearts, exposing who truly submits to Him and who persists in arrogance. For the wrongdoers, this delay becomes a rope that only tightens, increasing their sins before the final reckoning.
Examples of why Allah grants respite:
- To test sincerity of faith – If punishment came instantly, people would follow out of fear, not true belief.
- To give chance for repentance – Allah’s mercy allows time for people to turn back to Him.
- To expose hidden intentions – Time reveals who obeys only when convenient and who stays firm in truth.
- To increase the wrongdoer’s sins – The arrogant only go deeper into corruption, sealing their fate.
- To let societies reach their destined point – Civilizations are allowed to continue until their collective injustice makes their fall inevitable.
- To remind believers of patience – The delay shows that this world is temporary and the real justice is with Allah.
- To fulfill His divine plan – Events unfold in stages according to wisdom we cannot fully see.
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 16:61
If Allah were to impose blame on people for their wrongdoing, He would not have left upon the earth any creature. But He defers them for a specified term. And when their time comes, they will not remain behind an hour, nor will they precede it.
📖Quran 35:45
If Allah were to punish the people [immediately] for what they have earned, He would not leave upon the earth any creature, but He defers them for a specified term. And when their time comes, then indeed Allah has ever been, of His servants, Seeing.
📖Quran 3:178
And let not those who disbelieve think that Our granting them respite is good for them. We only give them time so that they may increase in sin, and for them is a humiliating punishment.
📖Quran 14:42
And never think that Allah is unaware of what the wrongdoers do. He only delays them for a Day when eyes will stare in horror.
📖Quran 11:117
And your Lord would not destroy the cities unjustly while their people were reformers.
So, Allah’s delay is a mercy for some – giving time to repent – and a justice trap for others – letting them drown deeper in their sins until His decree arrives without escape.
Why Allah Allows Oppression to Continue
Now, regarding those suffering or even dying under oppression:
Allah did not promise to always stop oppression instantly. Instead, He commanded us to act, to fight injustice, and to defend the weak. If believers fail to act, oppression continues as a test. Allah allows time to see who will rise with His command and who will remain silent.
And as for those who are killed unjustly, they are not truly dead. Allah has honored them with eternal life:
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 2:154
And do not say of those who are killed in the way of Allah, “They are dead.” Rather, they are alive, but you perceive [it] not.
📖Quran 3:169-170
Do not think of those who are killed in the way of Allah as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision, rejoicing in what Allah has bestowed upon them of His bounty, and they receive good tidings about those who have not yet joined them, that there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.
📖Quran 22:39-40
Permission [to fight] has been given to those who are being fought, because they were wronged. And indeed, Allah is competent to grant them victory. Those who have been evicted from their homes without right – only because they said, “Our Lord is Allah.
📖Quran 47:4
So when you meet those who disbelieve [in battle], strike their necks until, when you have inflicted slaughter upon them, then secure their bonds, and either [confer] favor afterward or ransom [them] until the war lays down its burdens. That is the command. Had Allah willed, He could have taken vengeance upon them Himself, but [He ordered armed struggle] to test some of you with others.
So, when people suffer and die under oppression, it is not that Allah ignores them. He allows time as a test:
- To see if believers will stand up against tyranny.
- To give the oppressors rope before He seizes them.
- To raise the rank of the oppressed, granting them life with Him, beyond what we perceive.
There has never been a past where Allah took instant action at the demand of people. His justice always comes in His timing, not ours – and within that delay, He distinguishes the true believers from the pretenders.
