Allah’s Mercy and Forgiveness
📖Sahih Muslim 2621
Jundub reported that Allah’s Messenger ﷺ stated that a person said: “Allah would not forgive such and such (person).”
Thereupon Allah the Exalted and Glorious, said: “Who is he who adjures about Me that I would not grant pardon to so and so? I have granted pardon to so and so and blotted out his deeds.”
Explanation:
This hadith highlights the unfathomable mercy of Allah. In this narration, a person presumes that Allah would never forgive another person, but Allah Himself corrects this presumption. He asks, “Who is this that presumes to speak on My behalf about not granting pardon?” The underlying message is that Allah’s mercy is far beyond human understanding, and no one has the right to declare who will or will not be forgiven by Allah. The specific instance refers to the deeds of a sinner who repents and asks for forgiveness, showing that Allah can forgive even the gravest of sins when a person turns to Him in sincere repentance. It is essential to understand that forgiveness from Allah is not merely based on the sinner’s actions but rather on the sincerity of their repentance and their submission to Allah’s will.
Pardon in Islam:
Pardon from Allah is given to those who acknowledge their mistakes, seek forgiveness through repentance, and correct their ways as much as they can. It is not a free pass but a reflection of the sincerity in one’s heart and the effort to follow the guidance of Allah.
There are specific conditions in the Qur’an and Hadith about what is required for true repentance:
-
Regret for the Sin: The person must truly regret their wrongdoing.
-
Immediate Turn to Allah: The individual should immediately turn to Allah for forgiveness.
-
Promise Not to Return to the Sin: The person must sincerely resolve never to return to that sin again.
-
Compensation: If the sin involved others, such as theft or injustice, restitution should be made.
If all these steps are followed, Allah, in His mercy, will pardon the individual. However, there are also sins for which no pardon is given, such as shirk (associating partners with Allah), unless the person repents before death.
Conditions for Allah’s Forgiveness Based on the Qur’an:
While Allah’s mercy is vast and all-encompassing, He has also set boundaries and guidelines that must be followed for forgiveness to occur. This is in line with His justice and wisdom.
-
Repentance for Mistakes and Sins:
Allah forgives sins and mistakes that occur out of ignorance or weakness. However, once a person realizes their mistake, they must repent sincerely to be pardoned.📖Quran 4:17
Allah only accepts the repentance of those who do evil ignorantly or carelessly and then repent soon after. It is they to whom Allah will turn in forgiveness. And Allah is ever Knowing and Wise. -
Shirk (Associating Partners with Allah):
Shirk is considered the gravest of sins in Islam, and Allah does not forgive shirk unless a person repents before death. This is because Allah’s oneness (Tawhid) is central to the foundation of Islam. However, He can forgive all other sins.📖Quran 4:48
Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. -
The Importance of Sincere Repentance:
Repentance (Tawbah) is an ongoing process, and Allah always waits for His servants to turn to Him in repentance, no matter how many times they fall into sin, provided they are sincere in their efforts.📖Quran 66:8
O you who have believed, repent to Allah with sincere repentance. Perhaps your Lord will erase from you your misdeeds and admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow on the Day when Allah will not disgrace the Prophet and those who believed with him. -
The Mercy of Allah:
The mercy of Allah is highlighted in the Qur’an repeatedly. Even when someone has committed grave errors, Allah promises forgiveness if they return to Him with sincerity and faith.📖Quran 39:53
Say, “O My servants who have harmed yourselves by your own hands, do not despair of Allah’s mercy. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. He is truly the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.”
Allah’s Justice and Mercy:
Allah’s ability to forgive all sins except for shirk emphasizes that He is both Just and Merciful. His justice ensures that the rules He has laid out for repentance and forgiveness are upheld, but His mercy allows sinners the chance to redeem themselves. When people repent, acknowledging their mistakes and seeking forgiveness, Allah wipes away their sins, as mentioned in the hadith. However, Allah does not go against His own commands—for instance, if someone knowingly commits a sin and continues to persist in it without regret or repentance, they should not expect Allah’s forgiveness. But, for those who are genuinely remorseful, ask for forgiveness, and follow the prescribed conditions, Allah, in His infinite mercy, will forgive them.
