No faith in adulterer, thief, drunkard, or killer

📖Sahih al-Bukhari 5578
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: When a servant commits illegal sexual intercourse, he is not a believer at the time of committing it; and if he steals, he is not a believer at the time of stealing; and if he drinks alcohol, he is not a believer at the time of drinking it; and he is not a believer when he commits a murder.”
‘Ikrimah said: I asked Ibn Abbas, “How is faith taken away from him?” He said, “Like this” — and he clasped his hands and then separated them — and added, “But if he repents, faith returns to him like this,” and he clasped his hands again.

Explanation:
This hadith shows that when someone commits a major sin, their true faith is temporarily lifted – not completely erased, but their connection to imaan is severely damaged. It doesn’t mean they’ve left Islam, but they act against the core of belief.

But it doesn’t give permission to sin and then repent casually.
• Repentance (Tawbah) is only accepted when it’s sincere – not a game of sin > sorry > sin again.
• Also, in an Islamic system, major crimes like zina (adultery), murder, and theft have legal punishments (ḥudūd), and repentance after punishment is part of the process – but still, ultimate forgiveness is up to Allah.
• So it’s not just “do sin and repent.” You may be punished in this world, and no guarantee of full forgiveness unless Allah wills.

📖Quran 4:17
Allah only accepts the repentance of those who do evil ignorantly or carelessly and then repent soon after. It is they to whom Allah will turn in forgiveness. And Allah is ever Knowing and Wise.
This verse clarifies that true forgiveness is only promised when sin is committed out of ignorance – not with pride or rebellion. Once a person knows it’s haram, yet continues, they risk Allah’s punishment more severely.

Some Major Sins That Are Forgivable (if repented sincerely):
  • Lying Quran 24:7 – condemned, but not unforgivable)
  • Backbiting Quran 49:12 – severe but forgivable
  • Running from battlefield out of fear or weakness Quran 8:15–16 -condemned, but not declared permanently unforgivable)

Major Sins That Are Extremely Dangerous – Forgiveness is up to Allah:

  • Zina (adultery/fornication)
  • Murder
  • Disrespecting parents
  • Associating partners with Allah (shirk)
  • Accusing chaste women of zina
These sins are so grave that even repentance may not guarantee forgiveness unless Allah accepts it. We cannot claim or promise forgiveness for these without divine confirmation.

📖Quran 4:48
Surely Allah does not forgive associating partners with Him, but He forgives anything else of whoever He wills. Whoever associates others with Allah has indeed committed a grave sin.

📖Quran 5:33
The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive to spread corruption in the land is death, or crucifixion, or the cutting off of hands and feet from opposite sides, or exile from the land. That is their disgrace in this world, and a great punishment awaits them in the Hereafter.

This confirms that even if someone repents, earthly punishment must still be enforced, and forgiveness from Allah is not guaranteed, This verse also includes those who commit acts such as adultery, killing an innocent person, or falsely accusing chaste women -all of which are major forms of corruption (fasād) on Earth. Such criminals are considered to be cutting through the moral foundation of society. The punishments mentioned – death, crucifixion, amputation, or exile – are examples of Sharia penalties, but they can be applied through various legal methods based on modern conditions. The verse doesn’t forbid using different means of punishment; it leaves room for contextual application according to the time, place, and governance.
