Knowledge is Quran, Sunnah, and justice
📖Sunan Abī Dāwūd 2885
Abdullah ibn Amr reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Knowledge is three types and anything else is a surplus: a decisive verse, or an established Sunnah, or an obligation of justice.”
Description:
This hadith highlights the foundation of true Islamic knowledge. The Prophet ﷺ reduced all essential knowledge into three categories:
- A decisive verse (Qur’an): Clear and direct guidance from Allah, which cannot be doubted or debated. These verses set the framework of belief, worship, and law.
- An established Sunnah: The teachings and actions of the Prophet ﷺ that explain, detail, and put Qur’an into practice. Without Sunnah, much of the Qur’an’s command would remain broad.
- An obligation of justice: The rulings that protect fairness, prevent oppression, and ensure balance in society. Justice is a core principle in Islam, and without it, knowledge is empty.
From this, a Muslim can build the whole religion. All other hadith and verses are either tafsīr (explanation), tafṣīl (detail), or application – but the root is already complete here. That’s why the Prophet ﷺ said “anything else is surplus,” meaning if these three are firmly held, a person already has what is necessary for salvation, So the point: Sometimes one verse or one hadith itself is so foundational that it covers everything. You don’t need to bring in other hadiths or ayāt to prove it, because this one statement is already self-sufficient and capable of building the whole religion if followed correctly.
What we learn today:
- Real knowledge is not about endless debates or collecting facts but about what brings us closer to Allah and makes us live with justice.
- A Muslim should measure all learning against these three standards: Does it align with Qur’an? Does it follow Sunnah? Does it establish justice? If not, then it is surplus and potentially a distraction.
- The foundation of Islam is Qur’an and Sunnah. If something is not required, not directly commanded, or not explicitly needed, then what has already been revealed in Qur’an and covered by authentic Hadith is sufficient for guidance.
