No Sin if One Truly Does Not Know

📖Sahih Muslim 1579
Abdullah ibn Abbas reported: A man presented a water-skin filled with wine to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Prophet said, “Do you know that Allah has forbidden it?”

This shows the man was not sinful, because he did not know wine was forbidden. The Prophet ﷺ simply informed him – no punishment, no blame. Islam judges by knowledge and intention, It is like if someone unknowingly serves pork or eats it by mistake – there is no sin because they did not intend to disobey Allah. Once they learn, then they are accountable.

Quranic Context:

📖Quran 2:225
Allah will not call you to account for what is unintentional in your oaths, but He will call you to account for what your hearts intended.

This shows that what is done unintentionally is excused – accountability is only for what the heart intends.

📖Quran 33:5
…There is no blame upon you for what you did by mistake, but only for what your hearts intended. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.

Clear proof: mistakes and acts done unknowingly carry no sin. Sin is only when intention is present.

📖Quran 6:54
…Your Lord has decreed mercy upon Himself: that any of you who does evil in ignorance and then repents after that and corrects himself — indeed, He is Forgiving and Merciful.

If someone does wrong out of ignorance, Allah’s mercy covers them once they realize and correct themselves.
