Consequences of Avoiding Jihad

📖Sahih Muslim 1910
It has been narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“One who died but did not fight in the way of Allah nor did he express any desire (or determination) for Jihad died the death of a hypocrite.”
‘Abdullah b. Mubarak said: We think the hadith pertained to the time of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).

🔍 Explanation:

This hadith highlights the importance of niyyah (intention) and commitment toward defending Islam. During the Prophet’s ﷺ time, the Muslim ummah faced constant threats, oppression, and war from those who sought to wipe out Islam. In such a climate, not even thinking about defending Islam showed a level of hypocrisy—claiming to believe, but refusing to stand up when it mattered.

‘Abdullah b. Mubarak’s statement clarifies that this hadith was initially about those who ignored jihad during a time when it was clearly obligatory, when Muslims were directly under attack and survival of the faith was at stake.

Relevance Today:

While physical jihad isn’t always the duty of every individual in every era, the principle remains:

If Muslims are attacked, and other Muslims don’t even feel the need to defend them or Islam, then they’ve lost the spirit of Islam. They allow harm to befall others while staying silent, passive, or cowardly—and that is hypocrisy in action.

This doesn’t mean every Muslim must fight, but it does mean that when injustice happens, a Muslim must care, desire justice, and be ready to support (whether through speech, wealth, or action)—especially when innocent Muslims are being oppressed.

Qur’anic Context:

📖Quran 2:190
Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress limits. Indeed. Allah does not like transgressors.

📖Quran 2:191
And kill them wherever you overtake them and expel them from wherever they have expelled you, for oppression is worse than killing.

📖Quran 2:193
Fight them until there is no more persecution and [until] worship is for Allah. But if they cease, then there is to be no aggression except against the oppressors.

📖Quran 22:39
Permission [to fight] has been given to those who are being fought, because they were wronged. And indeed, Allah is competent to give them victory.

📖Quran 8:60
And prepare against them whatever you are able of power and of steeds of war by which you may terrify the enemy of Allah and your enemy…

📖Quran 8:61
And if they incline to peace, then incline to it [also] and rely upon Allah. Indeed, it is He who is the Hearing, the Knowing.

Islam is not a religion of violence, but it is not a religion of passivity either. It commands peace when peace is offered, and justice when injustice is done. The real hypocrisy is in those who let Muslims bleed while staying silent, and worse, mocking those who defend them. The hadith is a reminder: If you die never even caring about the defense of Islam, then your claim to faith is hollow.
