Seeing the Speck, Forgetting the Log

📖Sahih Ibn Hibban 5761
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “One of you sees the speck in his brother’s eye while he forgets the log in his own eye.

Explanation:
The word “speck” refers to a tiny fault, a small mistake, or a minor shortcoming in someone else. On the other hand, the “log” means a far greater fault or sin that exists within oneself. The Prophet ﷺ is teaching us that people often rush to criticize others for small mistakes while ignoring their own bigger flaws. This hadith emphasizes the importance of self-reflection, humility, and correcting our own errors before pointing out the faults of others.

Quranic Context:

📖Quran 49:11
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule another people; perhaps they may be better than them. Nor let women ridicule other women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after faith. And whoever does not repent – then it is they who are the wrongdoers.
Mocking and finding faults in others is condemned — as those you look down upon might actually be better in the sight of Allah.

📖Quran 2:44
Do you order righteousness of the people and forget yourselves while you recite the Scripture? Then will you not reason?
This verse directly reflects the hadith’s meaning: focusing on others’ faults while neglecting one’s own is hypocrisy.

📖Quran 61:2-3
O you who have believed, why do you say what you do not do? It is most hateful to Allah that you say what you do not do.
Allah warns against hypocrisy and self-contradiction, highlighting the importance of sincerity and practicing what we preach.
