Knowledgeable tongue but corrupt heart

📖Musnad Aḥmad 140
Umar ibn al-Khattab reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, among what I fear most for my nation is every hypocrite with a knowledgeable tongue.”

📖Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Ḥibbān 80
‘Imran ibn Husayn reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Among what I fear most for you are the debates of hypocrites with a knowledgeable tongue.

This hadith warns about people who speak eloquently about Islam, quoting verses and knowledge, but whose hearts are filled with hypocrisy. Their words may impress, but their actions contradict faith. Such individuals mislead others by twisting the truth, using religion as a tool for power, fame, or deception. The Prophet ﷺ feared them because they cause greater harm than open enemies – they destroy from within.

A hypocrite with knowledge is more dangerous than an ignorant enemy. He knows the language of truth but uses it for falsehood. He wears the mask of a believer but hides disbelief inside. This hadith reminds Muslims to seek sincerity (ikhlas), not just speech, and to judge a person’s character by actions aligned with the Qur’an and Sunnah, not by eloquent words alone.

Quranic Context:

📖Quran 63:1
When the hypocrites come to you, they say, “We testify that you are the Messenger of Allah.” And Allah knows that you are His Messenger, and Allah testifies that the hypocrites are liars.

📖Quran 2:204
And of the people is he whose speech amazes you in worldly life, and he calls Allah to witness as to what is in his heart, yet he is the fiercest of opponents.

📖Quran 4:145
Indeed, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of the Fire — and never will you find for them a helper.
