Four Characteristics of a Hypocrite

📖Sahih al-Bukhari 34
Narrated ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr: The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever has the following four characteristics will be a pure hypocrite, and whoever has one of the following four characteristics will have one characteristic of hypocrisy unless and until he gives it up:

  1. Whenever he is entrusted, he betrays.

  2. Whenever he speaks, he tells a lie.

  3. Whenever he makes a covenant, he proves treacherous.

  4. Whenever he quarrels, he behaves in a very imprudent, evil and insulting manner.”

This powerful hadith exposes the deep moral and spiritual danger of hypocrisy. It reminds us that hypocrisy isn’t only about belief, but also about actions and behavior. A person may appear to be outwardly Muslim, yet these inner flaws can destroy the sincerity of their faith if left unchecked.

Each of these traits contradicts the character expected of a true believer:

1. Betrayal of Trust

📖Quran 8:27
“O you who have believed, do not betray Allah and the Messenger or betray your trusts while you know [the consequence].”
Trust is a sacred duty in Islam, and betrayal is not just a sin—it’s a sign of hypocrisy.

2. Lying

📖Quran 16:105
“Only those fabricate lies who do not believe in the verses of Allah, and it is they who are the liars.”
Lying is directly linked to disbelief, and persistent lying corrupts the heart, as explained in other hadiths.

3. Breaking Promises

📖Quran 17:34
“…And fulfill [every] commitment. Indeed, the commitment is ever [that about which one will be] questioned.”
Treacherously breaking promises is a violation of Islamic integrity and reflects a dangerous lack of fear for accountability.

4. Abusive Behavior in Arguments

📖Quran 49:11
“O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people—perhaps they may be better than them…”

Islam encourages dignity and self-control, especially during conflict. Insulting and behaving disgracefully in arguments contradicts prophetic manners.
