Hope for Good from Allah at Time of Death
📖Sahih Muslim 2877 c
Narrated Jabir ibn Abdullah al-Ansari: I heard Allah’s Messenger ﷺ say three days before his death: “None of you should die except while hoping only good from Allah, the Exalted and Glorious.”
Explanation:
If a person made mistakes in life, whether through weakness, ignorance, or by accident—but later turned to Allah and sincerely asked for forgiveness, then he should never think that Allah will send him to Hell. Instead, he must think positively of Allah and hope for His mercy, because Allah is more merciful than we can ever imagine. Before death, a person should not let fear or guilt overcome him. Rather, he should remember that Allah promised to forgive those who repent, and he should meet death hoping for the best from Allah, not expecting punishment.
Instead, the Prophet ﷺ is teaching us:
At the moment of death, forget your sins and think about His mercy.
Qur’anic Support:
📖Quran 39:53
Say, “O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.”
📖Quran 4:17
Allah only accepts the repentance of those who do evil ignorantly or carelessly and then repent soon after. It is they to whom Allah will turn in forgiveness. And Allah is ever Knowing and Wise.
🌟 Why We Must Hope in Allah’s Mercy:
-
He Forgives Every Sincere Repentance
Even if someone did something wrong, once they seek forgiveness, they should not fear Hell, but instead trust that Allah can and will forgive them. -
Allah Promised to Respond to Repentance
📖 “And He it is who accepts repentance from His servants and pardons misdeeds…” (Quran 42:25) -
Despair is from Shaytan
Shaytan wants us to lose hope and assume we are too sinful to return to Allah—but Allah says the opposite. -
Allah Judges by the Ending
If someone returns to Allah before death, with sincere repentance, then their ending is beautiful—even if their past was full of mistakes.
