You would laugh less, cry often if you knew
📖Sahih Muslim 2359
Anas ibn Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Paradise and Hellfire were shown to me and I have never seen such good or evil as I have today. If you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep often.”
Description: This hadith shows that Allah gave the Prophet ﷺ a unique vision of the unseen. It was shown only to him, not to everyone else, because if all people saw it, they would no longer have free choice. Their actions would be forced by fear or desire, and there would be no real test of faith. The Prophet ﷺ could see what others could not because he is the Messenger of Allah.
What We Learn Today:
- The unseen reality of Paradise and Hell is far more serious than worldly pleasures and distractions.
- Our laughter and entertainment should not make us forget the Day of Judgment.
- True awareness of the Hereafter brings humility, tears, and repentance.
- The Prophet ﷺ was chosen to see what others cannot, reminding us to trust his guidance fully.
- Life is a test of free will – not seeing the unseen allows sincerity in belief and action.
- Balance is needed: Islam does not forbid joy, but it warns against heedlessness.
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 17:60
And [remember] when We said to you, “Indeed, your Lord encompasses the people.” And We did not make the vision which We showed you except as a trial for the people, as was the accursed tree [mentioned] in the Qur’an. And We threaten them, but it increases them not except in great transgression.
📖Quran 53:17-18
The sight of the Prophet did not swerve, nor did it transgress. He certainly saw some of the greatest signs of his Lord.
📖Quran 81:23
And he has certainly seen him in the clear horizon.
While the hadith may have been at a different time, the Prophet ﷺ was already granted and shown such experiences by Allah based on these verses.
