The vision of Paradise and Hell

📖Sahih Muslim 426a

Anas reported:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in prayer, then turned to us and said:

“O People, I am your Imam, so do not precede me in bowing, prostration, standing, or turning. For I see you in front of me and behind me. By Him in Whose Hand is the life of Muhammad, if you could see what I see, you would laugh little and weep much.”

They asked, “What did you see, O Messenger of Allah?”
He replied:

“I saw Paradise and Hell.”

💡 Explanation & Reflection

This hadith reveals a profound reality — the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was granted a direct vision of Paradise and Hell, a level of knowledge and awareness not given to ordinary human beings.

🔹 His role as a Prophet included access to the unseen (ghayb) by Allah’s will — to guide us with certainty.
🔹 The vision he described was not metaphorical, but a true witnessing, granted only to him.

Why Can’t We See the Unseen Like the Prophet ﷺ?

Because we are not Prophets. Allah has hidden Paradise and Hell from human eyes in this world for a reason — to preserve free will.

If every human saw Jannah and Jahannam:

  • No one would disobey — not because of belief, but because of fear

  • Actions would be forced, not done out of love, sincerity, or faith

That would defeat the purpose of our test in this dunya.

🕊 Faith requires believing in what we cannot see.

Qur’anic Context

“Who believe in the unseen…”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:3)
☑️ True believers are defined as those who believe without seeing — that’s the test.

“Indeed, We made that which is on the earth an adornment for it in order to test them — which of them is best in deeds.”
(Surah Al-Kahf 18:7)

“We have certainly created man and We know what his soul whispers to him… and We are closer to him than [his] jugular vein.”
(Surah Qaf 50:16)

Allah knows what’s in our hearts – and wants us to obey with sincerity, not just fear of what we see.
