The Prophet Love for Unborn Believers
📖Sahih Muslim 249a
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) visited the graveyard and said:
“Peace be upon you, O abode of the believing people. We, if Allah wills, shall soon join you. I long to see my brothers.” The companions asked: “Aren’t we your brothers, O Messenger of Allah?” He replied: “You are my companions. My brothers are those who have not yet come.” They asked: “How will you recognize members of your Ummah who haven’t come yet?” He responded: “If a man had horses with white markings on their foreheads and legs among all-black horses, wouldn’t he recognize his own?” They replied: “Certainly, O Messenger of Allah.” He said: “They will come with radiant faces, arms, and legs from the effects of wudu (ablution). I will reach the Cistern (Hawd) before them. But some people will be turned away from my Cistern, like a stray camel is driven away. I will say, ‘Come, come!’ But it will be said to me, ‘You do not know what they did after you.’ So I will say, ‘Be gone! Be gone!'”
Explanation:
This hadith shows the deep love the Prophet ﷺ has for his future followers—those who never saw him but still believe in him. They are his brothers, and he will recognize them on the Day of Judgment by the light shining from their bodies due to wudu. However, the hadith also contains a severe warning: Some people from this Ummah will be pushed away from the Prophet’s Cistern because they changed the religion after him—through innovation, hypocrisy, or abandoning Islam. Despite once being counted among the Ummah, they will be rejected by the Prophet himself on that Day. This shows that leaving Islam or corrupting its teachings will cut a person off from the mercy and intercession of the Prophet ﷺ, but at the same time, others will come in their place—those who are sincere, humble, and obedient.
Does this hadith mean those who go astray are just fulfilling prophecy and had no choice?
No. The hadith isn’t saying that people were destined or forced to go astray.
Rather, it’s a warning — the Prophet ﷺ, by Allah’s inspiration, was informed that some people in the future will choose to leave the straight path after claiming to be from his Ummah.
So:
- The Prophet ﷺ was warning before it happens, so people can stay alert and avoid it
- The people who get turned away from the Cistern are those who consciously chose to corrupt, abandon, or change the religion
- This means the door was open, they could have stayed firm, or they could return even after going astray
The Door Was Open — and Still Is
-
Some will never return — because they made a final decision to reject the truth.
-
Their pride, arrogance, or hatred made them cross the limits, and as a result:
Allah leaves them astray as a consequence of their own rebellion.
🧾 As Allah says:
“So when they deviated, Allah caused their hearts to deviate.”
(Surah As-Saff 61:5)
“We shall turn their hearts and their eyes away from guidance, as they refused to believe in it the first time.”
(Surah Al-An’am 6:110)
-
But even among those warned in the hadith, some can still return, because the choice was, and remains, theirs to make, until the very end.
Qur’anic Context:
📖Surah Muhammad (47:38):
And if you turn away, He will replace you with another people; then they will not be like you.”
This verse confirms the lesson in the hadith:
➡️ If someone abandons the truth, Allah doesn’t lose anything. He can replace them with people more sincere, more faithful, more deserving, So while one may choose to leave, another heart will be opened, and that person will take their place among the ranks of the guided.
