The Fleeting Nature of this World and the Priority of the Hereafter
Sunan Ibn Majah 4108
Mustawrid, a brother of Banu Fihr, said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: ‘The likeness of this world in comparison to the Hereafter is that of anyone of you dipping his finger into the sea: let him see what he brings forth.’”
🔹 Explanation:
In this profound analogy, the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) emphasizes how insignificant the worldly life is when compared to the vastness and permanence of the Hereafter. Just as a single drop clinging to a finger is nothing compared to the entire ocean, the joys, struggles, and possessions of this world are nothing compared to the eternal bliss or regret awaiting in the next life. This hadith is a reminder to not be deluded by the temporary and fleeting pleasures of this world. Instead, we are encouraged to strive for the eternal rewards of the Hereafter through righteous deeds, sincerity, and submission to Allah.
🔹 Qur’anic Context:Surah Al-Ankabut (29:64)
And this worldly life is nothing but amusement and play. But indeed, the home of the Hereafter—that is the [true] life, if only they knew.
This verse echoes the same message as the hadith, stressing that real life is the eternal life to come—not the distractions and illusions of this world.
