📖Sahih Muslim 2768
Safwan b. Muhriz reported that a person asked Ibn ‘Umar: “How did you hear Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) speak about intimate conversation (between Allah and His servant)?”He replied: “I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: A believer will be brought before his Lord on the Day of Resurrection, and Allah will place His veil (of Light) upon him, covering him from others. Allah will then make him confess his sins and ask, ‘Do you recognize them?’ The believer will say, ‘My Lord, I do recognize them.’ Then Allah will say, ‘I concealed them for you in the world, and today I forgive them.’ Then, he will be given the Book of his good deeds. But as for the disbelievers and hypocrites, there will be a public announcement before all creation: ‘These are the ones who lied about Allah.’”
Why Does Allah Hide Sins?
Allah, in His infinite wisdom, does not immediately expose a sinner’s faults to the world. Instead, He gives them multiple chances to repent. Here’s how He keeps sins hidden:
1️⃣ By Concealing It from People – He does not allow others to see all sins.
2️⃣ By Not Allowing Others to Speak About It – He prevents people from spreading it.
3️⃣ By Allowing Repentance – If Allah exposed every sin instantly, there would be no chance for change.
4️⃣ By Keeping Sins Secret Until Judgment Day – If a person dies without repentance, Allah may still choose to cover their faults in the Hereafter.
📖Surah Al-Baqarah (2:284)
“To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth. Whether you disclose what is in yourselves or conceal it, Allah will call you to account for it.”
Why Does Allah Forgive Some Sinners But Not Others?
Many ask, “Why does Allah forgive some sinners instead of punishing them immediately?” The answer lies in justice, mercy, and free will:
🔹 He Gives Time for Repentance
📖Surah Az-Zumar (39:53)
“Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of Allah’s mercy. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins.”
🔹 If He Punished Everyone Instantly, No One Would Survive
📖Surah An-Nahl (16:61)
“If Allah were to punish people for their wrongdoing immediately, He would not leave a single creature on the earth…”
🔹 Not Every Sinner is Forgiven – Only Those Who Repent
📖Surah Al-Furqan (25:70)
“Except for those who repent, believe, and do righteous deeds. For them, Allah will replace their evil deeds with good.”
Allah Has the Power to Forgive Any Sin If He Wills, The hadith does not specify which sins were forgiven, meaning that Allah can forgive anything. However, He does so based on justice and sincerity.
Why Are Disbelievers Not Forgiven?
Allah does not forgive disbelievers (kuffar) because they reject Him entirely. The greatest sin is disbelief (kufr) because it is a direct denial of truth.
🔹 They Readily Accepted Hell Themselves
📖Surah Al-Anfal (8:32-33)
“And when they said, ‘O Allah, if this (Qur’an) is indeed the truth from You, then rain down upon us stones from the sky or bring us a painful punishment.’ But Allah would not punish them while you (O Muhammad) were among them…”
- Many disbelievers mocked the idea of Hell and said, “Do whatever you want, we won’t believe.”
- They challenged Allah to punish them, showing arrogance.
🔹 They Chose Hell with Free Will
📖Surah Fussilat (41:40)
“Indeed, those who deviate from Our verses are not hidden from Us. So, is he who is cast into the Fire better, or he who comes secure on the Day of Judgment?”
- A thief who denies the police will still be arrested.
- Likewise, a disbeliever rejecting Allah does not mean Hell does not exist.
🔹 Disbelief is the Greatest Sin
A person can sin and still believe in Allah’s mercy. But rejecting Allah entirely is like rejecting the cure for a deadly disease.
Example:
- A student fails an exam. If he apologizes and tries harder, the teacher may help him.
- But if he insults the teacher, denies the school, and refuses to study, how can he expect to pass?
🔹 They Had Time to Believe But Rejected It
📖Surah Al-An’am (6:27-28)
“If you could but see when they are made to stand before the Fire and will say, ‘Oh, would that we could be returned (to life on Earth) and not deny the signs of our Lord…’ But no! They will say that only because the truth has been made clear to them.”
- They will regret their disbelief, but it will be too late.
Why Does Allah Forgive Some But Not Others?
✅ Sinners who repent are forgiven because they acknowledge their mistake.
❌ Disbelievers are not forgiven because they reject Allah Himself, choosing Hell willingly.
➡ Forgiveness is for those who seek it. Punishment is for those who demand it.
Allah’s justice is absolute, meaning everyone will receive what they deserve—either mercy or punishment.
📖Sahih al-Bukhari 7067
Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “A man had committed so much sin that when death approached, he said to his sons, ‘When I die, burn my body, crush my bones, and scatter my ashes in the sea. By Allah, if my Lord gets hold of me, He will punish me as no one else has been punished!’ So, they did as he instructed. Then, Allah commanded the sea to gather his remains, and He brought the man back to life. Allah asked him, ‘What made you do what you did?’ He replied, ‘Fear of You, O Lord!’ So, Allah forgave him.”
🔹 What Does This Hadith Teach?
Allah’s Mercy is Beyond Imagination
- The man doubted whether Allah would forgive him, but his fear of Allah was sincere.
- Fear of Allah led to his forgiveness.
🔹 Allah Has Power Over Everything
📖Surah Yasin (36:82)
“When He decrees a matter, He only says to it, ‘Be!’ and it is.”
🔹 Even Sinners Can Be Forgiven If They Truly Fear Allah
📖Surah Az-Zumar (39:53)
“Do not despair of Allah’s mercy. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins.”
Not All Are Forgiven – It Depends on Fear & Sincerity
The hadiths mentioned do not prove that Allah forgives everyone automatically. Instead, they show that Allah’s forgiveness is based on sincerity and fear of Him.
🔹 Forgiveness in these hadiths was for specific individuals who:
✅ Had genuine fear of Allah.
✅ Did not reject Allah or deny His justice.
✅ Did not commit sins arrogantly, thinking they would be forgiven anyway.
📖Surah An-Nisa (4:116)
“Indeed, Allah does not forgive associating partners with Him, but He forgives anything less than that for whomever He wills.”
🔹 Allah Can Forgive All Sins – But Not Arrogance Towards Him
- If someone commits sins thinking ‘Allah will forgive me anyway,’ that’s mockery, not repentance.
- Deliberate disobedience without care is not forgiven.
📖Surah Al-Baqarah (2:81)
“Yes, whoever earns evil and his sin has encompassed him—those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein.”
The Difference Between a Sin and a Mistake
| Mistake | Sin |
|---|---|
| Done accidentally or out of ignorance. | Done knowingly and intentionally. |
| Regret follows immediately. | No regret; often done repeatedly. |
| Allah easily forgives if one seeks forgiveness. | Requires true repentance (Tawbah). |
| Example: Misunderstanding a religious ruling. | Example: Drinking alcohol despite knowing it’s haram. |
📖Surah Al-Ahzab (33:5)
“There is no sin upon you for what you do by mistake, but only for what your hearts deliberately intend.”
✅ If someone sins but regrets, Allah can forgive them.
❌ If someone sins while thinking “Allah will forgive me anyway,” they are mocking Allah’s mercy.
📖Surah Al-Hijr (15:56)
“And who despairs of the mercy of his Lord except those who are astray?”
Allah’s forgiveness is vast, but it is for those who seek it sincerely, not for those who sin without care.

These sins can lead to Hell if a person does not repent sincerely.
- Shirk (Associating partners with Allah) – The greatest sin in Islam
- Kufr (Disbelief in Allah) – Rejecting or denying God

- Murder (Killing an innocent person)
- Zina (Fornication/Adultery) – Engaging in unlawful sexual acts
- Homosexuality (Lut’s people’s sin)
- Riba (Interest/Usury) – Exploiting others financially
- Slander (Accusing someone falsely, especially of adultery)
- Magic (Sihr) – Practicing or believing in magic
- Oppression and Tyranny – Mistreating people unjustly

- Taking or Giving Bribes
- Lying About Allah & His Messenger (Fabricating hadiths or Islamic rulings)
- Consuming Orphans’ Wealth Unjustly
- Being Arrogant & Mocking Others
- Rejecting the Qur’an & Sunnah After Knowing the Truth
- Supporting the Enemies of Islam Against Muslims
- Being a False Witness
📖Surah An-Nisa (4:31)
“If you avoid the major sins which you are forbidden, We will remove from you your minor sins and admit you to a noble entrance (Paradise).”
Murder and rape are among the most severe crimes in Islam, carrying the harshest punishments due to the immense harm they cause to others.
-
Punishment for Murder & Rape: The default punishment is death, as both crimes destroy lives and create immense suffering.
-
Forgiveness in This World: If the victim’s family forgives the murderer, or if the rape survivor forgives, then the legal punishment may be lifted. However, this does not automatically mean the sinner is forgiven by Allah.
-
Forgiveness in the Hereafter: Only Allah knows the true intentions and repentance of the person. If someone commits a crime out of ignorance, force, or temporary weakness but sincerely repents, Allah may forgive them.
-
Unlawful Sex (Zina): Not every case of zina requires an immediate punishment. If someone falls into sin unintentionally, repents sincerely, and does not persist, they may find Allah’s mercy.
-
Human Judgment vs. Divine Judgment: Humans can only judge based on outward actions, while Allah knows what is hidden, why a person did what they did, whether they regret it, and whether their repentance is sincere.
