Deeds for Heaven and Hell

📖Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2004
Abu Hurairah narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was asked about that for which people are admitted into Paradise the most, so he said: “Taqwa of Allah, and good character.” And he was asked about that for which people are admitted into the Fire the most, and he said: “The mouth and the private parts.”

Understanding the Hadith

This hadith highlights two main factors that lead a person to either Paradise or Hellfire.

✅ Taqwa of Allah (Fear & Consciousness of Allah) and Good Character – These are the most common reasons for entering Jannah.
❌ The Mouth and the Private Parts – These are the biggest causes of Hellfire.

📖Surah Al-Ahzab (33:70-71)
“O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. He will [then] amend your deeds for you and forgive your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment.”

🔹 This verse reinforces the Prophet’s (ﷺ) words – controlling one’s speech leads to righteousness and ultimately, Paradise.

1. How the Mouth Leads to Hellfire

Many sins are committed through the mouth:

  • Lying – Spreading falsehood to deceive others.
  • Backbiting – Speaking ill about someone in their absence.
  • Slander – Accusing others falsely.
  • Mockery & Insulting – Hurting others with words.

📖Surah Al-Hujurat (49:12)
“And do not backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of Repentance, Most Merciful.”

🔹 Islam condemns using the tongue for harm, as it destroys relationships and spreads corruption in society.

2. How the Private Parts Lead to Hellfire

Sins of the private parts include:

  • Zina (Fornication & Adultery) – Engaging in unlawful relationships.
  • Homosexuality – Forbidden in Islam.
  • Incest & Rape – Grave sins with severe punishments.
  • Exposing oneself indecently – Lack of modesty.

📖Surah Al-Isra (17:32)
“And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is an immorality and an evil way.”

🔹 Islam commands chastity and modesty, as these protect family values and society from corruption.

Although there is an option for forgiveness, we cannot guarantee it. We know that forgiveness exists, but it is ultimately up to Allah. He forgives based on justice, and only when a person acknowledges their wrongdoing and sincerely repents. However, if the crime deserves punishment, then justice must be served.

3. What Leads to Paradise?

Taqwa (Fear of Allah) – Being mindful of Allah in all actions.
Good Character – Treating others with kindness, patience, and justice.

📖Surah Al-Mutaffifin (83:14-15)
“No! Rather, their hearts have been stained by what they used to earn. No! Indeed, they will be veiled from seeing their Lord that Day.”

🔹 People with corrupt speech and immoral actions will be distanced from Allah, while those with good character will attain nearness to Him.

🔹 A believer’s greatest test is controlling the tongue and desires.
🔹 A sharp tongue can break hearts, and unchecked desires can ruin lives.
🔹 Paradise is for those who fear Allah and uphold good character.

📖Surah Al-Fussilat (41:33)
“And who is better in speech than one who invites to Allah and does righteousness and says, ‘Indeed, I am of the Muslims’?”
