Muslim Leaders Must Help the Needy
📖Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1332
Abul-Hasan narrated that ‘Amr bin Murrah said to Mu’awiyah: “I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying: ‘No Imam closes his door on one in need, dire straits, and poverty, except that Allah closes the gates of the Heavens from his dire straits, his needs, and his poverty.’ So Mu’awiyah appointed a man to look after the needs of the people.”
Understanding the Hadith
This hadith teaches that leaders are accountable before Allah for how they treat the needy. If they ignore the poor and refuse to help, then Allah will abandon them in their own times of hardship.
✔ The Prophet (ﷺ) warned that neglecting the poor brings consequences in both this world and the Hereafter.
✔ Mu’awiyah, upon hearing this hadith, immediately took action and appointed someone to ensure the people’s needs were met.
✔ This shows that true leadership is about serving the people, not enriching oneself.
📖Surah Al-Ma’un (107:1-3)
“Have you seen the one who denies the Recompense? That is the one who repels the orphan and does not encourage the feeding of the poor.”
🔹 This verse directly exposes the hypocrisy of those who claim to be righteous but abandon the poor.
Lessons from the Hadith
1. Leadership is a Responsibility, Not a Privilege
Islamic leadership is not about palaces, luxury cars, and billion-dollar bank accounts. It is about serving the people, ensuring justice, and protecting the weak.
📖Surah An-Nisa (4:58)
“Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due and when you judge between people to judge with justice.”
🔹 Leaders are given a trust (Amanah) by Allah, and if they fail, they will be judged for their corruption.
2. Today’s Muslim Leaders – A Disgrace
The Prophet (ﷺ) led with justice, yet today’s so-called ‘leaders’ live in palaces while their people starve. They spend billions on luxury while refugees from their own lands die in hunger and cold.
- Did the Prophet (ﷺ) ever build golden palaces like the kings today?
- Did he hoard wealth while his people suffered?
📖Surah Al-Isra (17:16)
“And when We intend to destroy a town, We command its affluent ones, but they defiantly disobey, so the word comes into effect upon it, and We destroy it completely.”
🔹 Allah warns that when the rich and powerful become corrupt and ignore the poor, destruction follows.
3. Islam Teaches That Neglecting the Poor is a Sin
✔ The Prophet (ﷺ) spent his nights feeding the poor.
✔ Umar ibn Al-Khattab (RA) used to walk at night to check if anyone was hungry.
✔ Abu Bakr (RA) would personally care for widows and orphans.
But today? Muslim leaders fly in private jets while children in Gaza, Yemen, and Syria die from starvation.
📖Surah Al-Takathur (102:1-3)
“The competition for wealth has distracted you, until you visit the graves. But no! You will soon know!”
🔹 This verse exposes those who waste their lives chasing luxury instead of fulfilling their duty to the people.
4. The Fate of Corrupt Leaders – Humiliation in This Life and the Next
The leaders who ignore the poor will be abandoned by Allah when they need Him the most. They may escape justice in this world, but they will not escape it on the Day of Judgment.
📖Surah Al-Haqqah (69:28-29)
“My wealth has not benefited me. My authority has vanished from me.”
🔹 On the Day of Judgment, their stolen wealth and power will mean nothing.
📖Surah Al-Mutaffifin (83:14-15)
“No! Rather, their hearts have been stained by what they used to earn. No! Indeed, they will be veiled from seeing their Lord that Day.”
🔹 This is the punishment of those who abandoned justice—they will be denied even the sight of Allah.
✔ The Prophet (ﷺ) warned that leaders who ignore the poor will be abandoned by Allah.
✔ Islamic leadership is a trust, not a kingdom of corruption.
✔ Today’s leaders betray Islam, choosing luxury over justice.
✔ Every citizen has a duty to hold them accountable and expose their betrayal of Islam.
📖Surah Al-Anfal (8:27)
“O you who have believed, do not betray Allah and the Messenger or betray your trusts while you know [the consequence].”
🔹 This is a reminder: Leadership is a trust. Betraying it means betraying Allah Himself.
Muslim leaders today love their golden thrones more than they love Islam. But thrones will turn to dust, and justice will be served. They can ignore the poor now, but on Judgment Day, no door will open for them, just as they closed their doors to the needy in this world.
